Aftab convicted in Meenakshi abduction case

JAMMU, June 11 (JNF): In the 2001 Meenakshi abduction case, which had triggered violent protests in Udhampur town for several days, accused Aftab Ahmad Chandel was held guilty under sections 363, 366 and 376 of RPC and convicted by additional sessions judge R N Wattal. The accused, who was present in the court when the judgement was announced, was taken into custody by police forthwith. Meenakshi's father Natha Singh Bhatyal lodged a written complaint with Udhampur police station on February 9, 2001, that she had been abducted a day before, ie on February 8, by Aftab in connivance with Vikram Singh Salathia and Anoop Khajuria of Udhampur. It was mentioned in the complaint that Meenaksahi had been taken to some unknown destination in a Maruti car. The case was referred to CBI and further investigation was taken up under sections 120-B and 376 of RPC.
