Mere campaigning can never yield a solution to Kashmir
6/11/2012 11:05:12 PM
Whether belonging to the mainstream political sphere or to the separatist groups politicians keep on emphasising on the settlement of the Kashmir issue saying that the resolution of the 65-year old issue can ensure peace and political stability. Those who talk about the need for political stability and peace in the south Asian region are quick in saying that delay in the settlement of the Kashmir issue has delayed restoration of peace and political stability to the South Asian region. It is not only the political leaders, whether from the separatist camp or from the mainstream sphere, belonging to Jammu and Kashmir who have been parroting on immediate settlement of the Kashmir issue but political leaders from India and Pakistan also who have been favouring amicable resolution of the problem. During the last over eight years the two sides (India and Pakistan) have held series of parleys for resolving various issues, including Kashmir, but unfortunately there has been no progress in any field whether the issue pertains to Siachen, Sir Creek, Water or Kashmir. Still the clamour for resolving all the bilateral issues has not died.
And the latest to join the band of those political leaders pleading in favour of immediate settlement of the Kashmir issue is Mohd. Shafi Uri, senior National Conference leader and MP.The NC leader has emphasized the need for settlement of the Kashmir issue which could facilitate peace , economic stability and financial self-reliance;
He has said that once Kashmir issue is resolved, people will heave a sigh of relief and the state will achieve prosperity. Welcoming the foreign secretary-level talks between New Delhi and Islamabad, Shafi said it will help resolve basic political issue of Jammu and Kashmir. He has said; "National Conference (NC) has always supported Indo-Pak relations and facilitated a meaningful dialogue in a peaceful and friendly atmosphere." Mohd. Shafi also said the party has repeatedly stated that the economic development cannot resolve and replace the political issues. "Both have their significance and need to be addressed separately and in specific spectrums. We will create an atmosphere where the state becomes prosperous and peaceful," he said in a statement.
Like other leaders belonging to Jammu and Kashmir Mohd. Shafi has reiterated the demand for settlement of the Kashmir issue without saying anything on the possible solutions the problem can have. It is import ant when the problem could not resolved during series of talks the Government of India held with the Kashmiri separatists between 2003 and 2006. It has been seen that hitherto no senior political leader or any major political party has unfolded one or two solutions that could settle the Kashmir issue. These leaders have been favouring sustained dialogue for resolving the Kashmir issue but nobody has come forward with a set of solutions that could clinch the issue. Possibly it has been only the former Pakistan military ruler, Pervez Musharraf who had been candid while dishing out his four-point proposal on Kashmir. India rejected the proposal is a different matter but Gen.Mushrraf should be appreciated for having shown the guts while making known his solution to the problem. One may agree or disagree New Delhi sho-uld have studied the proposal between the lines and suggest some amendments and modifications which should have been taken up for discussion with Pakistan during the bilateral talks that were held between the two sides during the last three years.India needs to show courage in divulging a set of solutions to the Kashmir issue and persuade Pakistan to accept one of them in the interest of peace and political stability. Campaigning for a settlement of the Kashmir issue can never yield a solution.
