PDP brought accountability in JK Politics: Mahbooba | | | Early Times Report
KANGAN, June 11: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mahbooba Mufti has said that sense of insecurity and mis-governance of National Conference necessitated the formation of PDP in 1999. Addressing a one-day party workers' convention at Kangan, Mahbooba said that PDP became only hope and voice against the atrocities and suppression inflicted by the then regime. "PDP after coming to power with just 16 members scripted a new story of peace and prosperity in a very short span of three years. Besides restoring need for security among the people of all the regions, historical decisions like construction of Mughal road, re-opening of routes along LoC were taken by the PDP led government," Mufti said. She added that PDP had given a new direction to governance by making both politicians and bureaucrats accountable to people. "Today when more than three and a half years have passed the present NC-Congress regime is yet to register any significant contribution. On the other hand it has failed to take forward not only the political process started by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed but also failed to complete the developmental works started during that time," the PDP president remarked. Mufti said that formation of PDP was not aimed at attaining power but more to facilitate an important role in resolution of Kashmir issue. "That being the reason PDP's Self Rule document addresses all the dimensions of Kashmir issue in totality. Moreover, it is the only document at present which can benefit people of all the regions equally." While referring to Self Rule's component of restoration of resources to Jammu and Kashmir which includes water leading to generation of electricity, she said that the state could benefit between Rs 40 to 50,000 Crores annually from these resources. She also said Self Rule's emphasis on restoration of Silk Route could make Jammu and Kashmir, once again a gateway to Central and South Asia. She reminded the people of Kangan that the distance from Srinagar to Yarkand in China and from Srinagar to Iran and Afghanistan via Kargil and Askardu was not more than a thousand kilometers and both the routes went through Kangan. "It is Mufti Saheb's vision to see that Jammu and Kashmir once again becomes the hub of economic activities with the reopening of these routes," Mufti stressed. On this occasion, PDP's senior leader and former minister Tariq Karra, insisted that resolution of Kashmir issue is the priority of PDP and therefore the party is going from region to region to garner public support especially youth for implementation of PDP's political agenda. He said that PDP not only has the potential to change the course of political history in Kashmir but it can bring a holistic developmental change in the state provided people extend their support whole heartedly. "We want to develop all the regions so that our state provides an equal opportunity to our youth for a new future," he stressed. Senior PDP leader and former minister Qazi Mohammad Afzal, party leader Bashir Ahmad Mir the organizer of the event, party leader Sahkeel Ahmad and Mian Javed also addressed the gathering. |
