| Indo-Pak peace process progressing steadly:says DG CGVA | | | Mumbai Jan-31 As the peace process between India and Pakistan makes steady progress,a maritime hotline link inaugurated recently has helped reduce incidents of inadvertent crossing of sea boundary between the neighbours.This was stated by the Direcor General Coast Guard Vice Admiral (CGVA) Rusi F. Contractor on the eve of 30th Anniversary of the Coast Guard being celebrated today. Addressing media men here today the Vice Admiral said the link has provided better coordination with the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency.The hotline was inaugurated on November 14last year,as part of the Confidence Building Measures, he added. Admiral Contractor said that fishing vessels found straying within five nautical miles of the maritime boundary are normally returned if nothing incriminating is found on them. He said that in the past there were a large incidents of fishermen being caught by each other's country, as the maritime boundary is not clearly demarcated at certain places along the Kutch. Admiral Contractor said the Coast Guard is also helping raise Marine Police Stations to beef coastal security adding that Police personnel are being trained to secure the vast coastline. The Coast Guard has apprehended about 9,000 foreign fishermen and saved 24 crore rupees worth of aquatic wealth since its inception three decades ago. he said.In a clear indication of how susceptible our shores have become to drug traffickers, the Coast Guard seized narcotics worth nearly Rs. 240 crores last year. He said the Coast Guard commissioned three stations last year one each at Pondicherry,Beypore and Kakinada, for better surveillance.The force plans to go for a global tender to acquire a Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft shortly to enhance aerial surveillance capability,Vice Admiral said.
