Resignation of panchayat members continue | 200 positions fall vacant | | early times report Srinagar, June 11: Night patrolling by various security agencies in rural South Kashmir has not infused a sense of security in the panchayat members. Resignations continue to pour in. According to a local news agency, the numbers of resignations have exceeded 200. The statement of the Parliamentary affairs minister, Ali Mohammad Sagar has only added to the woes of the panchayat members. He said the government was not in a position to provide security to all panches and sarpanches for some `isolated' incidents of violence. The resignations have come in the wake of increased attacks on the elected panchayat members since last month. According to the police Jaish-e-Mohammad posters appeared at various places in Pulwama urging the panches and sarpanches to resign or face the consequences. Former Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed , however, holds the coalition government responsible for the `unfortunate' development. According to him, failure of the government to empower the panchayat members was the main reason behind the attacks. Some of the Panches hold a contrary view. The government perceived massive participation of people in panchayat elections as a defeat for separatism. This perception triggered the attacks, they believe. Political experts say the resignations can pose serious problems for the government. "The government may have to hold the elections a fresh if the trend continues", they said.
