NC obfuscating security for politics | Panches resignations in Valley | | early times report Srinagar, June 11: The alarming trend of resignations by elected Sarpanches and Panches in Pulwama district has created a spate of allegations and counter allegations in the mainstream political parties. In just one go, 33 elected Sarpanches and Panches issued paid advertisements in local newspapers asserting they had resigned their positions and had nothing to do with the offices to which they were elected in 2011 by voters. The district administration has vehemently denied that any such resignations have been submitted to them by the people who came out in public maintaining that they had resigned their elected positions. An interesting volley of allegations has been leveled by the ruling NC leadership against the PDP with regard to the resignation spree of Sarpanches and Panches in south Kashmir areas. The NC statement has blamed the PDP leadership of playing politics by ensuring these resignations. It is ironic that the NC should have blamed the PDP for engineering the resignations of elected Sarpanches and Panches in areas where most of the elected village elders belong not to the NC, but to the PDP. Why and how would the PDP axe its own political roots by asking its elected Sarpanches and Panches to resign? While this question needs to be reasonably answered by those in the ruling NC who preferred the blame, it is all the more important to address the reasons for such a trend among elected representatives. It was in the beginning of armed violence in the Valley that elected representatives and even government officials holding key positions issued public statements to declare their dissociation from mainstream politics and the authority of the state government. Whether or not it is accepted by the state government, terror threats have been issued through posters to Sarpanches and Panches not only in south Kashmir areas, but also in some areas of Pattan tehsil in Baramulla district in recent days. The purpose of such threats is obvious. Those interested in disturbing the peace and tranquility in the Valley are out once again to hijack peace. The frustration among forces inimical to peace in the state has increased because of a peaceful summer so far that has helped thousands of Kashmiris engaged with the tourist industry to earn a respectable livelihood. It is not in the best interests of those who want the people of Kashmir to engage in agitations and protests to see the stakes of the common Kashmiri grow in peace prospects. At the same time, any attempt to play politics on a crucial issue that concerns the security of the elected representatives is likely to confuse the issue rather than stem the rot. The acting DGP, K Rajendra Kumar has already taken a high level security meeting which reviewed the overall security in areas where resignation spree started in south Kashmir. A well coordinated security effort is needed to ensure that the trend of resignations among the Sarpanches and Panches is arrested. Trying to play politics and attempting to shift the focus from the real problem would be self-defeating. The ruling NC would do well not to engage in political gimmicks by accusing its rivals in the PDP for something both the parties would hardly have any control or unless the security is improved in such areas.
