Jammu, like Kashmir, also disputed, says Bhat | Preaching Falsehood | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 12: It's not only Kashmir which is a "disputed" region. Jammu province is also a "disputed" region whose political future, like the political future of Kashmir, has yet to be decided. This is what former APHC (M) chairman Abdul Gani Bhat said the other day while addressing the delegate session of his Muslim Conference (MC) at Srinagar. "Jammu and Kashmir was disputed even when India and Pakistan did not exist. People were offering sacrifices way before 1947 and are doing the same today," he said. The status of Jammu & Kashmir is disputed even without the United Nations resolutions, he also said. It has become customary with the Kashmiri leaders of all shades of opinion to preach falsehood, mislead the Kashmiri people and promote their personal agendas. But no one had ever expected that Bhat, who has been at the receiving end these days because of his views on the UN resolutions, would cross all the lines and question the very status of Jammu province. The Kingdom of Jammu was a distinct political entity under the Dogra Maharajas. This kingdom came into being over the years. The Jammu Kingdom had nothing to do with Kashmir till March 1846. It was only that year that the Maharaja of Jammu, Gulab Singh, purchased Kashmir from the British Government. He paid a sum of Rs 75 lakh to the British Government. There was a written deal signed both by the Maharaja and the British Government. In other words, the State of Jammu & Kashmir came into being only in March 1846, with Kashmir Valley becoming part of the Jammu Kingdom and not the vice-versa. The Dogra Maharajas ruled the state right till October 1947, when the state acceded to India as per the decision of the Maharaja and New Delhi conspired against Jammu in order to ensure the transfer of political power from Jammu to Kashmir. But this questionable transfer of power from Jammu to Kashmir could not be taken to mean that the arrangement linked the fate of the land of brave Dogras with Kashmir. Jammu was a distinct and historical entity before 1947 and it remained so even after the transfer of political power from Jammu to Kashmir. No one, not even New Delhi, can describe Jammu province as a disputed territory. The fact is that Jammu province is an integral part of India and it shall ever remain so. The status of Kashmir is no different. It, like Jammu province, is also an integral part of India and no one can de-link it from India. Will the likes of Bhat stop preaching falsehood? They must stop because they are only making fools of themselves by making ridiculous and laughable assertions. Bhat is a well-read person. It would be better if he studies the circumstances under which the State of Jammu & Kashmir came into being before he makes any comment on the political status of Jammu province.
