Punjab Civic Polls: Yet another humiliating defeat of Congress | Plight Of Cong In Jammu | | NEHA JAMMU, June 13: The so-called Indian National Congress (INC), which was founded by the Britons in December 1885 at Mumbai with the help of 72 Indians, all believers in the British sense of justice, to defeat the Indian freedom struggle, has been facing defeat after defeat since 2010. It suffered massive defeat in the assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Bihar last year and it could win just one seat more as compared to the left front in Kerala. Assam was the only state where it performed well. Not because it was popular but because of the fractured opposition and other local factors. The Congress suffered a massive defeat in all the by-elections, barring in a couple of constituencies, held across the country in 2010 and 2011. The Congress was defeated by the people in the urban local bodies' elections in all the major cities, including Mumbai and Bangalore, in 2010 and 2011. The Congress was defeated by the people in the just-held assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Goa. It could not win even simple majority in Uttarakhand. It won just one more seat, as compared to the BJP and formed a ragtag coalition government with the BSP and a few independent MLAs. It is doubtful if it would be able to complete full term. The politically awakened people of Delhi inflicted a crushing defeat on the Congress in the just-held municipal corporation elections. The BJP captured all the three corporations. In fact, it retained control over these prestigious local bodies. The people of Shimla defeated the Congress in the just-held Shimla Municipal Corporation elections. The Congress had controlled this prestigious corporation for more than 25 years. Himachal Pradesh has only one municipal corporation: Shimla Municipal Corporation. The people of Punjab again inflicted a crushing defeat on the Congress just two days ago. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-BJP combine captured all the four municipal corporations - Jalandhar, Amritsar, Patiala and Ludhiana. Not only this, the SAD-BJP combine swept municipal committee and Nagar panchayat elections across Punjab. The Congress failed even in Patiala, the home town of Captain Amrinder Singh, president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. The Congress was also wiped out in Ludhiana, which is represented in the Lok Sabha of the Congress national spokesperson Manish Tiwari. What does this indicate? It indicates that the Congress has become thoroughly unpopular across India. It can be said with confidence that if the general elections are held today, the Congress will not win even 70 seats. It has become so unpopular. It has lost touch with the masses and its government at the centre is being described in and outside India as the most corrupt, most inefficient and highly irresponsible. The story of the Congress is no different in Jammu & Kashmir. It is being dismissed as the most corrupt and anti-people outfit. The Congress ministers are being dubbed as the agents of the National Conference and the Congress is described as the C-team of the National Conference. The Congress ministers in the coalition government are also being dismissed as anti-Jammu and Valley-centric; they are also being dismissed as most incompetent. There is no rapport between the Congress leadership and the people. The Congress ministers are there but they are basically ministers of their respective constituencies. Besides, they are pulling each other's legs. There is no coordination between the Congress ministers and the party, which itself is faction-ridden. The Congress MPs have also forgotten their constituencies. They are busy in petty politicking and promoting their own interests. The out-of-power Congress MLAs are also busy in politicking. They are struggling very hard to join the ministry which, again, has lost touch with the masses. The most striking aspect of the whole situation is that neither the Congress ministers nor the party MPs and MLAs are prepared to recognize the ground realities as they exist, especially in Jammu province, which has reposed faith in the Congress party again and again. Similar is the story of the Congress leadership. The truth is that the Congress would suffer a humiliating defeat as and when elections are held in the state. That's the reason the NC-Congress coalition government is not organizing civic elections. It is mortally afraid of facing the electorate. The only silver-lining for the Congress in Jammu province is that its arch political rival, BJP, is in a very bad shape. But it is doubtful if the people of Jammu province would overlook the acts of omission and commission the Congress party and the Congress ministers have committed, and continue to commit, and again vote for this unpopular formation. The Congress leadership has to work day and night to win back the trust of the people and it can do so by severing ties with the NC and identifying themselves completely with them. But the question is: Will the Congress party do that?
