250 active militants in Valley are not here on picnic | | | early times report Srinagar, June 13: State DGP, K. Rajendra Kumar has confirmed that there are 250 militants still active in the Valley. This is definitely a matter of concern for the state police force and other security forces engaged in maintaining peace, tranquility and law and order which has brought in a modicum of normalcy in the state. The figure revealed by the DGP is higher than what has been reported in the media based on information provided by the state police last month. While the army is maintaining a 24X7 vigil on the LoC the fact that the senior most police officer of the state accepts a higher number than otherwise believed indicates fresh infiltration has taken place from across the LoC into the Valley. The objective behind the fresh influx of militants into the Valley is not difficult to understand. Those interested in peace have genuine reasons to get concerned as the stakes of the common man in peace are high. From businessmen, students, academicians, handicraft dealers, industrialists to law abiding citizens, peace is the prerequisite for all normal human activities. Those not interested in peace are, therefore, the enemies of the common man who must earn his daily bread in order to feed himself and his family. Those trained and qualified to comment on the security situation know well enough that it does not take much to disturb peace. A stray grenade attack, a piece of paper threatening Sarpanches and Panches and an intimidating phone call are enough tools to undo the gains of peace those have been consolidated in the state over the years through huge sacrifices by the police force and other security agencies. It is politically fashionable for some mainstream politicians to seek removal of security forces from cities and towns of the state. This is apparently being said to provide relief to the people. Ironically, those speaking of security force cut down should have normally proved their intentions by giving up on the heavy security bandobust detailed on their personal security. How can a politician speak with conviction about curtailment in the number of security forces for the cities and towns while he/she continues seek more of them for personal security? Charity must always begin at home and it would be in fairness to their proclaimed stand if they live up to their perceptions on the ground situation. You think there are no reasons to keep the security forces on ground, well, begin by voluntarily surrendering your own personal security. Anyway, that is a discussion which would not be fruitless to start with a politician whose priority would definitely be the next election and not the next generation. Yet, playing with fire is always fraught with the gravest risk of endangering one's own life and also those of others. Security is a no-nonsense issue and let not anybody play with it like an election manifesto. J&K has seen so much destruction that any chances with the security could be fatal. That recently more militants with obvious intentions have sneaked in should be reason enough to raise the guard and not in any way lower it. |
