| Journalists at high Diabetes risk: Dr Jitendra | | | early times report
Jammu , June 14 : "While Diabetes Mellitus is fast spreading across the world as a global epidemic, journalists and media persons have been identified as one of the high risk groups particularly vulnerable to Diabetes because of the constant mental and physical stress under which they work as well as the pressure of keeping professional deadlines coupled with irregular meal times and disturbed sleep patterns."
This was stated here today by Dr Jitendra Singh ,renowned Diabetologist, author and National Professor of Diabetes, while speaking at a Diabetes Awareness programme organized by Diabetes Care Foundation (DCF) exclusively for members of media fraternity and their families at Press Club of Jammu. Dr Jitendra Singh said that while life style disturbances are known to aggravate the risk as well as severity of Diabetes among the media fraternity, the rapidly rising level of competitiveness due to mushrooming of electronic channels as well as print newspapers and uncertain daily routine particularly during reporting assignments have led to huge recent rise in the prevalence of Diabetes among media persons. Citing, statistics, Dr Jitendra Singh said that today every fourth or fifth journalist even in this part of the country is suffering from Diabetes or Pre-Diabetes.
While recommending a slowing down in the pace of work activity, Dr Jitendra Singh suggested special stress-relieving training camps including Yoga, etc for the journalist community. He said particularly those media persons who have a positive family history for diabetes and are over-weight or obese need to be more careful. Since most of the working journalists are in the prime of their productive career,they need to guard against the silent damage caused by Diabetes to heart, kidneys, eyes, etc., he added.
On the occasion, Dr Jitendra Singh led a team of specialist doctors including Dr. Sandeep Dhar and Dr Pankaj Gupta, who offered free medical consultation and provided free of cost medicine. Free blood test for Sugar and other parameters as well as highly sophisticated Neuropathy test for diabetic effect on nerves was also carried out. Ashok Chaturvedi,Convenor Diabetes Care Foundation gave an account of activities carried out by the organization,while Balbir Ram coordinated the medical check-up of media persons and their family members. A large number of media persons and their family members got themselves checked at the camp. |
