PIL adjourned due to paucity of time | Defacement of Rocks on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway | | Jammu, June 14 (JNF) : In the much publicized Public Interest Litigation regarding defacement of rocks on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway filed in the year 2002, today the said PIL was listed after eight years could not be considered by the Division Bench due to heavy scheduled. In the said PIL a Division Bench of this High Court on March 20, 2003 comprising then Acting Chief Justice VK Jhanji (since retd) and Justice SK Gupta (Since rtd) had appointed a four member committee comprising two advocates namely Mr. Tashi Rabstan, Meyank Gupta and two members one from Geology Dept of Jammu University and one from RRL Jammu to may on spot assessment of the environmental damages, if any, done to the Shivalik Ranges by advertisements on the rocks painted by the multi-national companies. Then DB had authorized the said committee to video-graph the damaged done to the rocks and committee had also been directed to take into account the size and number of paintings put up by the multinational companies or any other person or business house.The committee submitted its report along with footages of video in which High Court was informed about the massive damage done to the eco-fragile environment on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. In the report it was submitted that there are 273 paintings on the rocks covering an area of 101372.87 ft and 369 are the wall paintings and apart from this committee also submitted that there are huge hoardings installed on the both the sides of the national highway. It is worthwhile to mention herein that a Division Bench of State High Court had imposed costs on the defaulting companies to the tune of Rs 15000/- initially on the pattern of costs imposed by the Apex Court in a similar PIL sub-judice before Apex Court. |
