Contaminated water responsible for Baramulla outbreak | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 15 'Contaminated water' has been confirmed as the cause for recent gastroenteritis outbreak in Baramulla's Drangbal area. "The samples collected from the locality have confirmed the water supplied from the reservoir is impure and not potable", Dr Rehana, the State disease Surveillance Officer told KNS. The state surveillance officer while confirming to KNS that water unsafe for drinking was the reason for the recent outbreak of gastroenteritis advised people to use boiled water for drinking purposes. "People can also use chlorine tables for purification of water", she added. Pertinently Minister for PHE Taj Mohiuddin and Minister for Health Sham Lal Sharma had recently visited the area after the outbreak to conduct on spot inspection. However, locals had alleged the PHE employees were allowing people to wash cattle in the water reservoir. "Water contaminated with human or animal excreta can easily result in such outbreaks", said the Surveillance officer. Meanwhile, sources in the health department have told KNS that more than 300 hundred cases of diarrhea and vomiting have been treated so far. Fresh cases of patients suffering from gastroenteritis have also been reported, sources added. Block Medical Officer Sheeri Baramulla Dr Anjum told KNS that teams of doctors are constantly in touch with locals to educate them on use of potable water. "People are using water treated with chlorine tablets and we hope spread of the disease will be under control soon", Anjum said. |
