| Number game of militants in J&K | | Govt blissfully ignorant or aware of varying statements of 2 DGPs…? | | early times report
Jammu, June 15: In less than one month J&K witnessed two varying statements on the number of active militants in the state , coming no less than from the highest rank of Police officers the two DGPs. While the outgoing DGP Kuldeep Khoda a couple of days before his superannuation said there are only 100-150 militants in the state, the new super cop K Rajendra just two days back confirmed presence of not less than 250 active militants across the state. Even as this is purely a number game which cannot surely determine the extent of militancy and terrorism related aspects in the state, the moot question is the government aware of real picture about security scenario in the state …? One also wonders which is the correct figure of the two.
There is no denying the fact the last over one month there has been sudden spurt in incidents and activities of militants and there are number of different instances to corroborate this. Even during the last month when Khoda was still in the super cop chair, many vulnarble places saw renewal of the old strategy of militants of attacking police stations , seizing weapons etc, besides the common and intermittent violence, lately followed by intimidating and pressuring acts leading to resignations by panches, sarpanches .
It took a worse turn today with the news about killing of worker of ruling party which has once again shook the political corridors with a sense of fear. What has come as a rude shock further to the mainstream political parties is resignation of workers from PDP as well as NC in parts of Srinagar today, no matter for separate or related reasons. In the backdrop of what is happening on ground in Kashmir at present remains a contradictory and quite different uttering of ex DGP Kuldeep Khoda in the state in which apart from portraying a somewhat 'ok' picture of security scenario in the state viz-a-viz militancy he went on to say there were around 100 or 50 more militants in the state . For all apparent reasons, the outgoing DGP tried to convey that he well within his tenure has been able to contain militancy and thereby help restore peace in the state. Pertinent to mention here is the fact the NC led government and NC leadership is particular has also been lauding his services and contribution in that direction, albeit of course this has also its own motive.
One cannot deny the role of Police force in fighting out militancy and containing it along with other para military forces. But the fact remains as far as militancy is concerned the facts have to be sacred and clear rather than in confusing signals. The government may be impressed for its own reasons with the 'style and functioning' of its officers but it has to be very clear and straight in terms of having information regarding all aspects that matter in so far as militancy and security scenario is concerned. It cannot afford to rely on half truth, exaggerated versions or false information, its prime concern at present being sustenance of peace , as the season is heavily loaded with influx of tourists in Kashmir and Annual AMarnath pilgrimage is about to commence. |
