Srinagar, Feb 1
Amid strong protest demonstration by the people, police exhumed the body of Abdul Rehman Padder, who was allegedly killed in a fake encounter, in presence of a team of forensic experts from Chandigarh, here today. The body was identified by the father of the deceased carpenter following which it was taken and buried in the ancestral graveyard of the family.
The visiting forensic team took the samples of the deceased and his relatives for DNA test to establish the identity, sources said.
Led by Dr Sandeep the experts’ team had arrived here couple of days back and was expected to exhume the body of the deceased on January 30. However, the police reportedly postpone the exhumation on account of Muharram.
It was reliably learnt that the team arrived in the graveyard at Bhatmohalla, Sumbal in Baramulla district this morning and started the process of exhumation. The team dug out the corpus of deceased carpenter Abdul Rahman Padder from the grave, under the supervision of an executive magistrate and investigating team of the police, which was led by Deputy Inspector General of Police Farooq Ahmed.
Amid protests outside the grave yard the body was dug out and shown to the family members of the deceased, sources said adding, “Father of the deceased who was present on the occasion confirmed his identity”.
Police team, sources said, conducted the postmortem of the body during which forensic experts also took the sample of the corpus for DNA verification. “Though the body was identified by the family, DNA testing was part of legal formalities”, a police officer said.
DIG Farooq Ahmed, who is investigating the case, said that the father of the deceased confirmed the identity of the deceased. “After identification and completion of legal formalities the body was handed over to the family who buried it in its ancestral graveyard at Larnoo, Kokernag”.
Thousands of people from the village and its adjoining villages participated in the last rites of the deceased.
The DIG said that the investigation of the case already started and “we are hopeful that some more alleged custodial killing cases could be re-opened in coming days”.
He said that the special team constituted to investigate the case was working overnight to complete the probe within shortest possible time. “Eight persons have been arrested so far while some more arrests are expected”, he added.
Earlier, when the body was being exhumed large number of people gathered outside the graveyard at Bhatmohalla Sumbal and staged a strong protest demonstration. Raising slogans against the government and police, the protestors were demanding immediate action against the guilty cops including a senior officer.
