Omar' support to Mukherjee is his support to Sonia Gandhi | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 16: Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, has, once again, displayed that being by the right side of the Congress led UPA Government in the centre would spare him of the embarrassment of playing the second fiddle to the state unit of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. This art of befriending, rather wooing, the Congress high command was demonstrated by Omar Abdullah by remaining present, despite his pressing engagements, during the time the AICC Chief,Sonia Gandhi, announced that the UPA had decided to field the Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, for the ensuing Presidential election. In what capacity Omar was present when Sonia Gandhi announced the name of Mukherjee for the Presidential poll ? This question is being asked by a number of political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir. Yes,Omar was present in many capacities. As a partner of the UPA the Working President of the National Conference,as Omar is,was supposed to rub shoulders with people who matter in the central Government. He was present in the capacity of the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and that too when the party he heads has three NC members in the Lok Sabha and three in the Rajya Sabha besides 28 members of the Legislative Assembly forming an important segment of the electoral college for the Presidential election. Omar did not remain content with his presence in the meeting that was presided over by Sonia Gandhi. He tweeted to keep on record his and his party's support for Mukherjee.Within minutes of the announcement of Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee being the ruling UPA's Presidential candidate, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah congratulated him through a tweet. "Congratulations to Pranab Da. I have no doubt he will make an excellent president & I'm pleased to have been able to commit NC's support," Abdullah said in a message on his Twitter page The NC's support to the UPA's presidential and candidate was a foregone conclusion.Still two days before Sonia Gandhi made the formal announcement about Mukherjee's name the NC leadership had declared its support to any candidate nominated by the UPA. In reality Omar's support to Mukherjee is his and his party 's support to the Congress high command in general and Sonia Gandhi in particular. Reports indicate that Omar has started following the footsteps of his father, Dr Farooq Abdullah, who had, after the 1984 episode, decided to remain by the right side of the party in power in New Delhi. This mantra Farooq Abdullah had adopted after his duly elected Government, having absolute majority in the Assembly, was dislodged through defections within the National Conference which had been allegedly engineered by the Congress in 1984. As a result of this realisation Farooq had remained by the side of the BJP led NDA Government and even all of his son,Omar ,to get inducted in the council of ministers headed by Atal Behari Vajpayee. Omar Abdullah has already succeeded in befriending the Union Home Minister,P.Chidamabaram, and the AICC general secretary,Rahul Gandhi, which has helped him in facing many a storms raised by the separatists and by the state unit of the Congress. The way Omar has been loud enough while proclaiming support for the Congress nominated candidate for the presidential election indicates that the Chief Minister is neither willing nor prepared to snap ties with the Congress despite the fact that the Congress led UPA Government has not accepted his repeated pleas for lifting of AFSPA and for withdrawing troops from within the civilian areas. Omar knows it better than any other colleague in the National Conference that in case the NC snapped ties with the Congress it would facilitate the PDP in regaining power. Since the NC leadership has been treating the PDP as its main political foe it is willing to help the PDP to regain power. Omar also knows that by aligning with the Congress for more than three years now could harm the Kashmir centric party but he has no other alternative but to maintain ties with the Congress.Well the longer the tenure for the NC-Congress alliance the better are the chances for the PDP to achieve bigger success in the next Assembly election.
