After panch resignations, Natipora killing worries NC | ‘We are sitting ducks’ | | early times report Srinagar, June 16: Shaken by the resignation of panches and sarpanches since last week, the National Conference received yet another shock yesterday when a halqa president was shot dead by unidentified persons at Natipora yesterday. Yesterday's killing was the fourth killing of its kind since December last year. The deceased, Abdul Rehman Ganie was shot dead by unknown gunmen when he was on his way to the local mosque for attending the Friday congregational prayers. He died on the spot. On December 24, gunmen whose identity could not be ascertained shot dead National Conference worker, Bashir Ahmad Dar at Batmaloo outside his shop. Bashir's father, a staunch NC worker was also shot dead in mid 90s by the militants. Another NC worker was shot dead in similar circumstances on February 18 at Hajin in Bandipora district. The deceased identified as Ghulam Hasan Dar was fired at from point blank range causing critical injuries to him. He succumbed on way to hospital. On March 30 unidentified gunmen forced entry into Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Bhat at Tral in South Kashmir and fired at him. Bhat, a halqa president of NC died on the spot while his wife, Haseena Begum sustained injuries. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and JKPCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz have strongly condemned the killing. However, the NC workers want the Chief Minister to go beyond issuing routine statements. "Presently NC workers are like sitting ducks. This has to change if NC has to survive as a party. We need proper protection", a NC worker wishing not to be named said.
