NC block president's murder eye-opener or myth exploder? | | | early times report Srinagar, June 16: The broad daylight murder of a ruling NC block president in Natipora locality of Srinagar city has punctured many a security myth about the complete dominance of the city by the security forces. As he went to offer the Friday prayers assassins shot at and killed Abdul Rehman Ganai in Natipora before they vanished into thin air. This is much for the complete dominance of the city areas by the security forces. As has been said umpteen times, security is a highly fragile issue and it does not take much for the anti-national elements to shatter it. One stray incident is technically enough to puncture the security balloon. It has also been proved that unseen killers are still roaming in the city who are unfortunately able to select targets and shoot them at will. This does not augur well for the peace prospects in the Valley which has been witnessing a peaceful summer this year that has hugely benefitted the local people. Those who talk of removal of security forces from Srinagar, removal of the bunkers and shifting of the paramilitary forces away from the city need to revisit their priorities. At a time when the annual Amarnath Yatra is about to begin any chances with the overall security in the Valley especially Srinagar city is fraught with the most serious consequences. Security is nobody's lollipop such that one can lick it or throw it at will. It has been after years of painful and extremely difficult times that we have arrived at a situation where peace seems to have returned to the beleaguered Valley. If the situation is allowed to slip back, the country would have to pay a heavy price besides the people of the state whose ruin would be inestimable. The state police force and the various paramilitary forces have been doing a great job by supervising peace, controlling separatist violence and mounting pressure on the militants who would naturally be on the lookout for worse times to return. It is the duty of everybody including those in power and those in the opposition to ensure that the life of the citizens of the state are not endangered in any manner much less exposed to peril because the political parties are fighting each other for one-upmanship. Those who are able to carry on mainstream political activities must realize that this has only been possible because the jawans and the officers of the state police and the paramilitary forces have maintained a constant vigil on the internal security. If in their eagerness to score a political point these parties do anything intentionally or otherwise that would jeopardize the prevailing peace, the state would have suffered a deafening blow. At the same it is vitally important that instead of trying to please their political bosses, the top brass of the state police, state and central intelligence agencies and the paramilitary forces must have the courage and the professional will to give dispassionate and unbiased assessment of the ground situation. Let nobody try and play the ostrich for despite speedy legs and power to outrun its hunters the ostrich gets trapped because of its failure to accept the truth.
