Probe whether militants plan killings of politicians | | | When unidentified gunmen shot dead an acting Block President of ruling National Conference (NC) in Natipora area of Srinagar the other day it indicated that agencies and anti-India elements were trying to destabilise peace and create scare among people that was needed for enlisting their cooperation for raising the level of violence and political instability in Jammu and Kashmir. This is the third political killing in the Valley during this year.Police sources said that Abdul Rehman Ganie son of Muhammad Shaban Ganie was shot dead from point blank range while he was on way to the local mosque to attend the Friday prayers. They added that three bullets had pierced the back of Ganie. This also indicates that Ganie must have been on the hit list of militants. It is yet to be seen whether the killing of Ganie was parrt of the old practice of setttling the personal score or was it the part of the plan of militants to repeat the practice of killing of political leaders and activists. Government reports indicate that between 1990 and 2010 about 550 political leaders and activists were killed by the militants in Jammu and Kashmir and among then over 420 belonged to the National Conference ,followed by 100 from the PDP and 92 from the Congress. In case the incident was the handiwork of some individual who wanted to settle personal score it deserves deep condemnation. But if it is part of the move to revive killings of political leaders and activists it is a very serious matter warranting a fresh review of the security bandobast. The killing has been condemned by the leeaders of the National Conference. What else they can do and ar supposed to do.But the way the PDP Chief,Mehbooba Mufti, has condemned the incident deserves proper appreciation from the Government. She has said that violence should have no place in any society especially the one like ours who have suffered death, destruction and miseries during the last two decades. She also expressed deep concern over this incident and the incidents of dishing out threats to Panches and Sarpanches forcing over two scores of them to quit. The NC leaders have demanded an inquiry. It is a genuine demand but the way Mustafa Kamaal has demanded that the inquiry need to unravel which agencies were behind the incident of killing of Ganie indicates that Kamaal tries to blame either the security agencies or the PDP.It is part of his personality because when Srinagar and its adjoining areas were rocked by for grenade explosions in October last year Kamaal had accused the Army of havi ng engineered these explosions to prevent the central Government from conceding Omar Abdullah's demand for lifting AFSPA. It would be better for political leaders like Kamaal to give up the habit of involving their political foes in such in such gruesome acts.It would be better if political leaders off various hues and ideologies help the Government in finding out the truth behind such gruesome incidents. One thing is certain.Militants are trying to regroup and reorganise their plans and activities.Their handlers across the LOC have been upset over the sharp downward curve in the militancy related activities and incidents of violence. If the state police and intelligence agencies are to be believed the rate of infiltration of militant from across the border has increased during the last four months.Between 700 and 800 militants , equipped with sophisticated weapons, are waiting on the launch pads across the LOC or sneaking into Jammu and Kashmir. Hence the security agencies, especially the Army continue to oppose the demand for withdrawal of the AFSPA. Reports reveal that the Army functionaries believe that once the AFSPA was lifted even under a phased programme it could provide much needed boost to the sagging morale of militants and their overground workers an supporters. Threats to Sarpanches and Panchess, killing of people like Ganie and increase in the level of ingress of militants call for upgrading the security grid. |
