Leadership styles of true leaders and their importance in nation building
NIKHIL GUPTA6/17/2012 10:53:06 PM
It is said that a leader is one who gives hope ,
sense of purpose and direction to the people . Without a leader even the army is rudderless and prone to defeats . Without a leader a nation is directionless . I am moved by recent statements of well known personalities of India who said that our nation is moving without a leader and that India is moving away from good times. This was said while commenting on S & P i.e. " Standard and Poors "downgrading of rating for India . Even "S & P" has mentioned about non implementation of liberalisation policies in India and has also made somewhat political comments. As a nationalist Indian I don't like comments of "S & P" but at the same time Indians should think about this issue and take corrective measures .
Leadership is of immense value and is very scarce . Only few among lakhs have good leadership qualities. If leader of a nation or tribe is not having best leadership qualities , then the whole nation has to pay for that because in times of war such leader proves ineffective and nation loses war and all its population is affected by it. Consider a purely hypothetical situation where the King of a nation is lazy , incompetent , indifferent to people's problems ; brahmins and pandits of that place loot people in name of religious rituals and trample them under garb of various superstitions ; agarwal ,arora and khatri merchants of that place loot people by way of hoardings and market manipulations and farmers are harassed by way of over taxation by king and become slaves of debt trap of sahukars and soods . Consider further in the same hypothetical situation the condition of the artisan class of that place e.g. say verma swarnkars or goldsmiths , carpentars or tarkhans , ironsmiths or lohars etc also under the harassing policies of the king and his ruling apparatus. Further the condition of very poor and downtrodden sections of the hypothetical place under consideration will definitely be bad when even the upper classes or castes are not in that good position under that incompetent king for the above mentioned purely hypothetical situation . Now consider further in above mentioned hypothetical situation that the said hypothetical place comes under attack from some foreigners who have no taste of civilization and who are running from hunger and strife in their own areas , then what will happen to this hypothetical place in this hypothetical situation ? In my view , such place where society is not united and where the leader i.e. king in this hypothetical case is not having requisite leadership qualities , will definitely get defeat at the hands of the foreign invaders who can wreck havoc in that place , cause loot , rape and plunder and even try to change faith of the people . No doubt in our hypothetical case the whole population of that place will have to face hardships , loot and plunder at the hands of enemy because of the poor leadership qualities of the leader of that place who let his kingdom get defeat at the hands of the foreign low class invaders . If in our hypothetical case , the king was competent and had requisite qualities of a leader , then he would have united the society and defeated the foreign enemy . In present context , if all sections of society become good i.e. brahmins , pandits become good and honest and they do not harass the devotees who come to temple for spiritual solace ; arora , agarwal and khatri merchants do their bussiness honestly ; farmers do hard work in fields and are not over taxed ; artisan class does hard work honestly and paid adequately and lower sections of society viz. SC/ST are not unduly harassed and they on their part do not keep on crying for more and more government aid ; the religious minority does not always blame majority for their poor condition and doesnot cry for more and more governmental aid and religion based reservations and religious majority also gives requisite share of development to the religious minority who are their fellow countrymen , only then can a nation progress and this is the job of the leaders of nations . Another important work of leaders is to take due care of the merit particularly in case of science and technology fields because with scienctific research , nation can produce high quality seeds that help farmers to obtain higher yields from their lands , scientific progress can ensure that nation is not dependent on foreign aid in case of medicine , air travel and even weapons and ammunitions . Recently our Indian army had conveyed to government of India about the age old state of the ammunitions and I am sure our government must have taken care of the problem . All such things come under the job profile of the true leaders . Of course there are multitude of so called leaders who take all benefits of leadership like free transport and various other facilities but donot take commensurate responsibility .
It is also the job of the leaders to ensure that the rule of law is followed in the country i.e. no innocent should be harmed and no criminal or offender is let off howsoever influential that offender may be . It is the job of leaders to ensure that the shameless and coward child killers in their country are given due punishment like death sentence and as there is independent judiciary in our nation , I think honourable judiciary should harshly punish coward child killers with death sentence . One prime job of true leaders is to ensure that the law and order machinery works in a fair and impartial manner i.e. it doesnot harass any citizen of this nation , shows respect to women , old persons and children and tries to minimise crime rate in the nation . What can be said of such law and order machinery that swoops on a hapless woman in dead of night even when there is no national emergency , keeps that woman in illegal custody , does torture and shows bravery against women as if there are no criminals or terrorists against which such law and order machinery could show bravery or that such law and order machinery didnot have any guts to show bravery against hardcore terrorists ? In my humble view law and order machinery should show respect to women , old and children because it is taught in their trainings to show respect to lawful citizens of this country . Anyways this is the job of only true leaders to ensure this thing . If law and order machinery becomes law unto itself then it is better to disband such law and order machinery , prosecute its persons who do illegal custodial torture and keep women in illegal custody . At the same time it is noted with appreciation that there are certainly some excellent and highly professional police officers in this nation and the example of Sh. B K GUPTA , Police Commissioner of Delhi can be quoted here who exhibited a good management and leadership style when the Delhi police solved the inhuman and almost blind rape case of a girl from north east . The solving of Radhika murder case and clearing of pandal during Baba Ramdev ji's fast in Delhi were other good achievements of Delhi police . It has to be noted that the Delhi police under very active leadership of Police Commissioner Sh. B K GUPTA cleared the pandal with minimum force and as pandal had many thousands of people , it could have been a stampede if its clearing was not properly managed or even some terrorist group could strike at that pandal but it was cleared within few hours by using minimum and just adequate force . Clearly Sh. B K GUPTA did his duty as a true KSHYATRIYA GUPTA . The true leaders should have such quality to lead by example .
It is also the job of leaders to let the private law abiding citizens live happily and ensure freedom of expression to them as the societies where there is no democracy and no freedom of expression , those societies tend to fail . We can have example of a neighbouring nation where there is no real democracy , no real freedom of expression and that nation is falling under its own weight . The recent hungama in Indian parliament over some cartoon was very bad example of poor state of affairs in our own honourable supreme legislative wing of the nation and it showed to the world that India had no bigger problem than some cartoon that too published way back . The leadership styles of leaders vary with respect to their nations , ehtnic orientations , beliefs , faiths and cultures . Just like Elton Mayo conducted famous Hawthrone experiments to judge the human behaviour under varying conditions , Kurt Lewin set out to identify different styles of leadership. His study was very influential and established three major leadership styles. In the study, schoolchildren were assigned to one of three groups with an authoritarian, democratic and laissez-fair leader. The children were then led in an arts and crafts project while researchers observed the behavior of children in response to the different styles of leadership. Lewin's study found that participative leadership or democratic leadership is generally the most effective leadership style. Democratic leaders offer guidance to group members, but they also participate in the group and allow input from other group members. On the other hand authoritarian leadership is best applied to situations where there is little time for group decision-making or where the leader is the most knowledgeable member of the group . In the delegative or laissez-fair leadership style , the leader offers little or no guidance to group members and leave decision-making up to group members. This style can be effective in situations where group members are highly qualified in their area of expertise . So all the three different leadership styles have their pros and cons and a successful leader often uses the best leadership style depending upon the situation . A new leadership style called "transformational leadership" is often the most effective approach to use. Transformational leaders have integrity, they inspire people with a shared vision of the future, they set clear goals and motivate people towards them, they manage delivery, and they communicate well with their teams . A charismatic leadership style can resemble transformational leadership because in both cases leaders inspire enthusiasm in their teams and are energetic in motivating others to move forward. This excitement and commitment from teams is an enormous benefit. But there is a downside to charismatic leaders and it is that they can believe more in themselves than in their group members . This can create the risk that a project or even an entire organization might collapse if the leader leaves or fails . A charismatic leader might believe that she or he can do no wrong, even when others are warning and this feeling of invincibility can ruin the team or an organization or a nation . The charismatic leadership style of pandit Nehru and his blind belief in "Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai " and his belief in not using air power in 1962 battle cost our nation very dear . The democratic leaders make the final decisions, but they include team members in the decision-making process. They encourage creativity and team members are often highly engaged in projects and decisions.Team members tend to have high job satisfaction and are productive because they are more involved in decisions. This style also helps develop people's skills. Team members feel in control of their destiny, so they are motivated to work hard by more than just a financial reward. Thus there are many benefits of democratic leadership. However, leadership is not "one size fits all" thing and a true leader must adapt his style to fit a particular situation he is faced with .
Some of the suggestions for leaders of our nation for improving our robust Indian governmental system are to make such a system where there are no discreationery powers to any class of government servant and particularly no discreationery power to law and order machinery . If any lawful Indian citizen comes for some work in any government establishment , then his work should be done in time bound manner or reasons explained to him why his work cannot be done . But here responsibility also lies on citizens not to try to get their work done in undue haste because most of government establishments are plagued with over load of work as the population of India is increasing day by day but workforce in government is not growing at same speed . So there is overload of work and this should be understood by citizens and problem arises when some influential citizens want to get their work done bypassing those standing in the queue for same work. In such a scenario , it is the duty of the government servant to do work strictly according to seniority i.e. who has come first , his work should be done first . For good leaders to succeed , there should be good followers also . Another thing that must get leader's attention is to immediately enforce such law in the nation whereby producing more than two or three children is made a cognizable offence and no government or public servant is allowed to produce more than the limit of two or three children . If India is not able to arrest the increase in population , then all the fruits of development will be squandered just to feed the increasing millions . China has managed its population growth effectively and there , only one child policy is enforced in an authoritarian way . As India is a democracy , the two or three child policy should be enforced in a democratic way but definitely not more than two or three children should be allowed to be produced by any married man . After enforcing this on government and public servants , even the private citizens should be asked to comply with this direction of the union government and our honourable parliament can make law on this issue and then the executive should enforce this law in a democratic , educative and impartial manner . The oft repeated statement that the poor have no other source of entertainment than to produce children is very vague now a days because these days even the poor have access to mobile phones , internet , video games , television , cinema and a host of such things by which they can amuse themselves. Sometime back women organisation of kashmiri pandits during a function held at Jammu gave a call to kashmiri pandits to produce more children . I don't know whether they had any nationalistic view in their minds . In fact , all such organisations that call for producing more children in name of religion or community should be taken to task by the nationalistic leaders because such organisations donot know that increasing population will be biggest evil in days to come when there will be shortage of land , housing , water , power and everything and there can be civil war for all such things . Then there is skewed population increase i.e. some communities are increasing population by leaps and bounds and some are not increasing at same speed and this can be corrected by imposing a uniform civil code in case of giving birth to children for every married man i.e. total number of children any married man can produce should be limited to two or three only in all cases including polygamous cases .
Again going back to some examples , in my view poor leadership was one of the factors for which rajputs of rajasthan had to face defeats at the hands of foreign invaders . Again in my view poor leadership was one of the factors for which sikhs had to face total defeat at the hands of British when Brits with their army filled with Biharies and Bengalies gave total defeat to sikhs in both anglo sikh battles and this resulted in permanent end of sikh's only kingdom . Due to poor leadership India had to face defeat in 1962 at hands of china . The hindsight tells us now that it was a folly of Indian leadership under Pandit Nehru not to use air power in 1962 battle . It was again lack of leadership when Pandit vajpayee ji took bus to Lahore without much knowledge that rogue nation of pakistan was planning to do kargil attack right under the garb of Lahore bus diplomacy and kargil attack happened within 90 days of Lahore bus ceremony .Thus , it is clear that the success or failure depends on the status and capacity of the leader . Much depends on the commander of the army . It was a very correct decision of Lieutenant General SUSHEEL GUPTA , then deputy chief of army staff of Indian army in 2007 to have successfuly commanded joint millitary exercises with participation of chinese and Indian troops . This was necessary to know each other's capabilities in such joint operation and such joint exercises enhance mutual trust . At the same time it was also necessary to maintain troop readiness in case of any misadventure from pakistan or attack from china or a joint attack from these two nations . I wonder who will come to India's help in case of joint attack of pakistan on western front and china on eastern front . It is my humble suggestion that our nation should develop very cordial relations with Russia once again just like in good old days when USSR leadership would tell to Indian leadership that they are just across Himalayas , just blow the whistle and they will come . India will be very fortunate if again a leader like Madam Indira Gandhi and an army commander like Gen Sam Manekshaw come at the helm of affairs in Indian national scene . It is to be noted that effective leadership styles of both Madam Gandhi and Gen Manekshaw saw India giving defeat to pakistan in 1971 battle .
Therefore , the leaders of nations should always have requisite leadership qualities and should be like true kshyatriya Guptas or warriors. India needs such true leaders who donot let India face any defeat in battle with any nation or a combination of nations . Indian leaders must work for production of large number of nuclear and conventional weapons and missiles so that no nation dares any misadventure against India . There is no dearth of true warriors in India . In my humble and learned view the best combination for true leadership available in this nation has THE ROYALE GUPTAS , THE ROYALE MARATHAS and THE ROYALE TAMILS as its prime components . But this list is not exhaustive and as I am totaly merit oriented person , this list is open to anyone with any background but having requisite merits and a love for nation of India .
