What lies beneath CM's statement on Jammu's power woes!

Jammu, June 17: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's statement regarding erratic power supply in Jammu region at the peak of a scorching summer has been taken by the people of the region with a pinch of salt.
Speaking to the mediamen after the passing out parade of the Deputy Superintendents of Police at the Sher- i- Kashmir Police Academy at Udhampur the previous day, Omar had said, "we cannot give 24 hours power supply as the power revenue collected from the consumers is far less that the cost of power that the state has to incur. Therefore people of the valley suffer during winters and those of Jammu during the summers."
Even though the statement of the Chief Minister reflects his candour and forthrightness; it lacks compassion and empathy of the elected head of the state. With accusations of discrimination with regards to collection of power revenue and distribution of the available power amongst two regions of the state hovering large on him. People of Jammu who are braving record surge in mercury amidst repeated, untimely and unscheduled power cuts have taken Omar's statement with a pinch of salt.
While Omar's statement intended to put entire blame on the consumer for not paying up for the power they used, he shirked from accepting failure in institutionalising the revenue collection system and hold deep pocketed officers of the PDD accountable for failing to realize the target revenue.
More than anything else, omar's statement did not reflect government's failure to check T&D losses in the state which have swollen to over 70 percent despite receiving thousands of crores from the union government under APDRP and other such schemes wherein generous allocations were made to his government to get the shoddy power infrastructure revamped.
Besides, Omar's statement also did not reflect that the biggest defaulters of the PDD were not the common consumers who are suffering the most, but the government departments and Ministers and Legislators who have lakhs overdue against their names as unpaid power revenue and yet they enjoy special lines of power.
It is time government realised the need to undertake surgical procedures with regards to power transmission, distribution and revenue collections so that innocent people who were ensured uninterrupted power supply after e-metering can be saved from worst power blues in the midst of an unprecedently harsh summer.
