Handiwork of elements at verge of retirement: Omar
6/18/2012 12:01:36 AM
early times report

Srinagar, June 17: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made clear that the retirement age row was a creation of some leaders who were at the verge of retirement.
Apparently referring to president Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) Khursheed Aalam who is retiring by the end of September this year, Omar Abdullah blamed leaders of Government employees of playing with the future of unemployed youth for their vested interests and ruled out enhancement in the retirement age of state employees.
Immaterial, whether the enhancement of retirement age from present 58 to 60 years will hamper the employability of the unemployed youth or not, the demand of the state government employees in any case cannot be termed as illegitimate and irrational. And if Khursheed Aalam resigns today from his services as is being said, then Chief Minister, Omar will be definitely in trouble
Though some ministers in Omar Abdullah led coalition government where blaming trade union leaders for playing with the future of the educated unemployed youth by demanding enhancement in retirement age, it is now official as the word about it has come from the horses mouth and if the trade union leaders who are at the verge of retirement resign today, Omar will be trapped in his own juggleries having then no other option than to concede to the demand of employees.
There are about 4.5 lakh government employees in the state and the demand for enhancement of retirement age is as cherished for them as is the power for the ruling National Conference. If NC would surrender everything for the lust of power, why should state government employees give up their legitimate demand?
When contacted Khursheed Aalam told Early Times that the demand for enhancement in retirement age is just and genuine and if Omar Abdullah wants to sabotage the struggle of 4.5 lakh employees by giving it a twist, he is mistaken. "If he thought that trade union leaders are doing it for their vested interests, I shall resign." Alam, however, did not say when he was going to resign. "I will take a decision to this effect very soon", he said.
