| Jammu journos receive raw deal: Press Colony still a dream | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 18: Despite promises made by the government, the proposal to establish a Press Colony in Jammu for journalists is still a distant dream.
While there is separate colony for the media persons in Kashmir valley, but in Jammu no headway has been made so far, despite assurances given by the Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand in Legislative Assembly also.Interestingly, the concerned authorities have identified 40 kanals of land for the colony, but nothing has been done to establish the same. It is pertinent to mention here that the case also was raised in the Legislative Assembly to provide accommodation to the journalists in the Jammu region. "Deputy Chief Minister also assured that journalists demand should be considered; now the Jammu scribes are pinning high hopes on the coalition government and hoped that the demand will be taken up on priority".Official sources said that the government identified the land some months ago. The proposal also sent to the concerned authorities for immediately start work on it. The concerned authorities only start work in paper but reality they have nothing done at present.
He further said that the department also 40 kanals land has been identified for media persons in Udheywala abutting Gajansu road. At present no housing colony is being developed either by JDA or by Housing Board in Jammu Province so their demand is genuine should be considered at the earliest, as per existing policy (Housing Policy 2004) and norms.
"The delay in construction of a Press Colony in Jammu, many time raised the issue of non- construction of a residential colony for the press people in Jammu, Province. Non-construction of a Press-Colony in Jammu is result of discriminatory attitude of the government even with the journalists of Jammu. Kashmir having a press colony, but why not in Jammu" sources said.
He further said that the youth of the state are taking the profession of journalism as full time carrier but are not being provided better facilities in this field. He said that the press is fourth pillar of democracy and it deserves respect and proper treatment.
Surpassingly, the concerned authorities showed no interest about talking about the issue. |
