Trade union leader bounces back on Omar, announces volunteer retirement | | | Bashir Assad Srinagar, June 18: Veteran trade union leader and president Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) Muhammad Khursheed Aalam today bounced back on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his remarks by announcing retirement from services ahead of the date of his superannuation, by doing so Aalam has thrown ball in Omar's court. A day after Omar Abdullah accused 'some trade union leaders' of playing with the future of unemployed youth of the state for their own vested interests as they were at the verge of retirement, president EJAC Khursheed Aalam today announced his volunteer retirement well ahead of the date of his actual date of retirement which falls on September 1st. Pertinent Early Times has reported the other day that Aalam was actively considering to announce his volunteer retirement from government service ahead of the actual date to prove chief minister wrong and today Aalam convened a press conference here and announced his retirement. "I am going to submit my papers to Director, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (Kashmir) tomorrow to prove chief minister wrong" Aalam told newsmen adding that he was represented the cause of 4.5 lakh employees and that there was nothing personal in demanding enhancement in retirement age . Lashing out at the coalition government, he said that Omar Abdullah government has backtracked from the agreement it reached upon with the employees on September 15, 2011. Veteran trade union leader said that the government had principally agreed to enhance the retirement age of state government employees from present 58 to 60 years and the Cabinet Sub Committee (CSC) was constituted to come up with its findings by the end of February 2012 and it was also agreed that a decision to this effect shall be taken by end of March 2012, however, it (government) neither made the report of CSC public nor accepted its recommendations. "Instead Chief Minister took a complete U-turn on the matter and tried to score political points by creating a wedge between the government employees and unemployed youth who, in fact , are our own children" added Khursheed. Belying Omar for his remarks, Aalam said that in 2008 when Omar Abdullah took over as chief minister, number of vacancies in government departments was about one lac while this government has filled 20000 posts through recruiting agencies on an average of 4000 each year. " If the recruitment process continues like this it will take twenty years to fill the vacancies, still this government is shedding crocodile tears for mere politics' said Aalam. "Let me remind chief minister, his government declared on the floor of the house in March this year that about 50,000 vacancies are lying vacant in various government departments. Moreover, he himself announced creation of 43000 casual labours which means 93, 000 vacancies are available with the government. Instead of taking measures to fill these vacancies, Omar Abdullah is trying to create a division between unemployed youth and the government employees" Aalam added. He said that the struggle for enhancement in retirement age, regularization of daily wager, and removal of pay anomalies will be intensified in the coming days and government will be solely responsible for the consequences. "We don't want to add to the sufferings of our people but the rigidity of government forces us to take extreme steps, so it is the government which will be responsible for all the consequences" added trade union leader. Meanwhile, Food and Supplies Employees Association today unanimously resolved that Khursheed Aalam will be the life long president of the association and employees will continue to draw inspiration from his long and undeterred leadership qualities.
