Wetlands facing extinction, Govt helpless
6/19/2012 11:46:27 PM
early times report
jammu, June 19: With only 16 wetlands left in the state now, the government should have undertaken their preservation on a war footing basis. But the government seems in no mood to focus on the dying wetlands. According to the sources the government under the State Plan Scheme Wetland Reserves has sanctioned an amount of Rs 35 lacs for Tsomoriri and Pangong in Ladakh, Surinsar-Mansar and Gharana in Jammu, Hosersar, Mirgund, Hygam and Shallabugh Lake in Srinagar. Sources said the sanctioned amount was too meager to cater to the needs of all the wetlands keeping in view the problems. "The department is managing the wetlands through various activities like construction of bunds to regulate water-level, de-weeding, maintenance of water pool and water channels, anti-poaching and anti-grazing with awareness and publicity programmes" they said.
Sources further said that that the concerned department has also initiated various steps for the restoration and further development of these wetlands. Sources disclosed that Rs 4.20 and 3 Crore were provided for preservation of Tsomoriri and Surinsar-Mansar Wetlands by the Ministry of Environment and Forest in the year 2008-09 but nothing has been done so far. Wildlife Warden Headquarters, Gulam Ahmed Lone said that out of 35 lakh only 24 lakhs has been provided to Tsomoriri Wetland of Ladakh. "For the rest of Wetlands the funds have not been released by the higher authorities" said Lone. Out of the 16 wetlands, the Gharana wetland is the worst hit. Contrary to the 1500-kanal notified land, it is 115 kanals which have been demarcated in revenue records, despite wetland reserve already been updated as Conservation Reserve through a notification issued in 1986. Pertinent to mention the encroachment in the wetland has reduced the size of the area to about 500 square meters, less than half of its official size.
