‘Power cuts’ due to high consumption, not due to Darbar move
6/20/2012 1:02:35 AM
BHARAT BHUSHAN
JAMMU, June 19: In a "belated" move that came nearly two months after the civil secretariat offices moved from here to Kashmir, the government today claimed that the irregular power cuts in Jammu had nothing to do with the biennial durbar move ritual but these were due to the increased electricity consumption.
The household allegation here is, however, that power shifted to Kashmir on April 27 last with the move of seat of power to the summer capital of the state.
Jammu started experiencing irregular power cuts from day 1 of the movement of civil secretariat offices from here to Kashmir. Almost every day, the voices, that emerged from almost every corner of the region, assailed the government for making the people of Jammu region suffer the worst nightmares in the scorching heat and soaring temperatures with no respite from scheduled and unscheduled power cuts.
People across the region were nowadays being made to feel the pinch of frequent power cuts amid hot summer.
Six months down the line, the offices would shut down in Srinagar and the employees would move back to Jammu. The power situation would then improve here overnight, strengthening the doubts of the people that they were likely to get adequate power supply only when darbar move offices opened here.
A PDD spokesman today sought to "clarify" that the unprecedented power cuts were linked to the increased consumption of 100 megawatts in Jammu this year as compared to the corresponding period last year.
He said last week, i.e, from June 9 to June 15, there had been electricity consumption of 952.71 lakh units in Jammu as against 914.3 lakh units during the corresponding period last year.
The spokesman claimed that despite the shortage of power by 152 MWs due to the low local generation, PDD, taking cognizance of the harsh weather conditions, had supplied almost 38 lakh units more power to Jammu region.
He said out of the allocated share of 1,264 megawatts, 1,406 megawatts had been made available from NHPC, NTPC, NPC and easter region.
To maintain grid discipline and avoid instability, the department had to stick to the allocation schedule by the northern grid, he said and added, "Overdrawing of power from the northern grid leads to grid instability in the entire region of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, UP and Delhi."
"To avoid such situations, warnings are issued for immediate load shedding and the state has to pay five times the normal rate for this unscheduled interchange. From June 11 to 16, the state received 49 such warning messages," the spokesman said.
He appealed to the consumers to use power judiciously, avoid its wastage and discourage power theft.
