J&K police one of finest forces in country, militant-cop nexus an aberration

early times report
Jammu, June 19: While the recent unearthing of a policemen-militant nexus is a matter of concern and worry for the state police force yet nobody should try and raise the ante about the professional excellence and integrity of J&K police which is written in blood and sweat.
The arrest of three Valley based policemen, Mukhtar Ahmad Sheikh of Rainawari, Mohammad Illyas of Khanyar in Srinagar and Mohammad Abbas of Tral in Pulwama finally led to the unearthing of a disturbing nexus between these policemen and the militants. The initial disclosures made by the arrested policemen led to the arrest of three more local policemen and five civilians from south Kashmir who were part of the dangerous nexus.
The SIT probing the case is drawn entirely from the state police force, the unearthing of the nexus was done totally by the Jammu and Kashmir police force and within hardly seven days after the murder of a former HM militants, Ghulam Hassan Mir alias Shabnum in Sadarbal locality of Srinagar on June 7, the nexus was cracked by the state police.
It is likely that the custodial questioning of the arrested persons might lead to some more arrests and perhaps also to disclosures of some other policemen who might have been working in tandem with the arrested policemen.
The J&K police force is one of the largest in the country comprising 1.27 lakh jawans and officers. Its duties have been so challenging that those who see the pomp and glitter of this state police force from outside hardly understand the complexities of its duties.
In breaking the backbone of militancy, the J&K police has done the country proud. The force consists of some of the finest officers and jawans of the country and it must be said to the entire credit of the state police that despite social and regional complexities, the men of the state police force have been in the forefront of fighting militancy and maintaining law and order.
The misplaced news reports that central intelligence agencies and paramilitary forces have been seeking access to arrested persons in order to reach independent and impartial conclusions have been vehemently denied by authoritative sources in the state government.
"We are carrying out investigations whose outcome and details will definitely be shared with the central intelligence agencies and the paramilitary forces as all of us act in complete synergy to maintain security in the state," a top official of the state police told Early Times.
It is part of the sinister propaganda to try and blow the unearthing of the policemen-militant nexus beyond proportions. It is just another subversive plot that has come to the knowledge of the country primarily because the J&K police force unearthed the nexus. Who exposed the nexus? Who moved in swiftly to ensure that the rot did not spread any further? It is to the credit of the state police that it has unearthed the nexus.
And for those who for sinister benefits want to convey an impression that the nexus in any way casts aspersions upon the integrity of the J&K police force one must state that in 1984 a Sikh security guard killed the country's Prime Minister and yet the Sikh community has been and continues to give India its bravest fighters and nationalists.
The unearthing of the nexus must, therefore, be seen as an aberration and dealt with as such. That is both in the interests of the overall security in J&K and the rest of the country
