| J&K gets 8 warnings from Nothern Grid for overdrawing power | | | early times report
Srinagar,Jun 20: Northern Grid (NG) has been issuing at an average of eight warnings daily to Jammu and Kashmir for overdrawing power, which if not checked, could result to grid instability leading the entire northern region to prolonged power cuts. A Power Development Department (PDD) spokesman said out of the allocated share of 1264 megawatts, 1406 megawatts have been made available from NHPC, NTPC, NPC and Easter Region. However, he said to maintain grid discipline and to avoid instability, the Department has to stick to allocation schedule by the NG. He said overdrawing of power from the northern grid leads to grid instability leading the entire region of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, UP and Delhi to prolonged power cuts. The spokesman said to avoid such situations warnings are issued for immediate load shedding and the state has to pay five times the normal rate for this unscheduled interchange. This year from June 11 to June 16 the state received 49 such warning messages, the spokesman added. He appealed consumers to use power judiciously, avoid its wastage and discourage power theft. About power supply situation in Jammu region, he said despite low generation, 38 lac units of additional power was being supplied to Jammu. He said there has been an increased consumption of 100 megawatts in Jammu this year as compared to corresponding period last year. This, according to a spokesman has been due to increased demand owing to hot summer. He from June 9 to June 15 this year there has been energy consumption of 952.71 lac units in Jammu as against 914.3 lac units during the corresponding period last year. He said despite shortage of power by 152 MWs due to low generation locally, the Department taking cognizance of the harsh weather conditions, has supplied almost 38 lac units more power in Jammu region. |
