Proposed third front can bark, not bite | | | Attempts continue to made by those political leaders, who are not being owned by those political parties that have firm roots in Jammu and Kashmir, at forming a third front in the state. The scope for the formation of a third front had been explored by three prominent political leaders, G.H.Mir, Hakim Yasin and M.Y. Tarigami five years ago. The plan could not make any significant progress and ultimately the idea was shelved when Ghulam Hassan Mir was inducted in the cabinet headed by Omar Abdullah in 2009. Mir was given an important portfolio leaving no room for him to grumble and grudge. Yes, three leaders had conceived the idea of floating a third front but they did not make sincere efforts after they found response from some political leaders, having areas of influence in Jammu and Kashmir, quite poor. Now after a gap of over five years Tarigami and Yaseen have revived their plan but this time Mir may not be with them and his absence was being filled, though poorly, by an independent MLA, Engineer Rashid. Observers treat it as an interesting turn of events in the state's politics as once again deliberations are being held behind the scene by some political players for formation of a political alliance which could prove an alternative to the present political and administrative arrangement in the state. Reports say many important political players in the state including CPI (M) State Secretary Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, Peoples Democratic Front chairman Hakim Yasin and Independent MLA, Engineer Rashid have confirmed that they are in constant touch with each other for working out the possibility of formation of an alliance, which could act as a third front.Tarigami has confirmed that smaller parties are in touch with each other. "We meet each other regularly. Politics is change and change is politics, anything is possible." However, Tarigami evaded the question whether the parties will contest the elections as an alliance, "It is too early to say whether we will form an alliance to fight elections together." Hakim Yasin also confirmed that they were in touch with smaller parties so that a viable third front was born. "We are in touch with each other. People also want a change and we are actively considering formation of an alliance, "Yasin has stated and observed that had the smaller parties joined hands and contested the 2008 elections together the poll results would have been different. Even before the birth of the third front dissenting voices have surfaced among those planning to form a new alliance. "Yes we are in touch. People want resolution of Kashmir issue and I am ready to be a part of any alliance that is for resolution of the issue, "says Engineer Rashid when the basic idea behind the front was to allow smaller parties to be in a position to register their presence and credibilty during future Assembly elections because those who had conceived the idea of forming a third front had securing poll gains in their mind and not the settlement of the Kashmir issue. It is so because if at all a third front was born in the state it would be too small to force a settlement of the Kashmir issue. If Yasin, Tarigami and Engineer succeed in wooing smaller parties to the front it may not pose any threat to the three main political parties, the PDP, the Congress and the National Conference, in the state.Yes the proposed third front can have teeth if it does not remain confi ned to the Kashmir valley and try to get direct support from the Panthers Party and the BJP. But it is yet to be seen if the BJP and Panthers Party ever become willing to join hands with politicians like Rashid who question the state's accession with India. Well political analysts are of the firm opinion that a third front which does not enjoy the support either from the Congress,or from the NC or from the PDP can be simply as strong as a paper tiger. Still if Tarigami, Hakim and Rashid are able to secure support from some smaller political parties the third front can bark if not bite .
