SAI selects 12 boys in basketball day-boarding | Scheme helps improve standard of the game | | early times report JAMMU, June 21: Sports Authority of India (SAI) has selected 15 young and upcoming boys, including three stand-byes, for its ongoing day-boarding scheme at Gymnasium Hall of the University of Jammu, here. Before the final selection, about 45 boys were tested for different skills, followed by the medical check up by a team of selectors deputed by the SAI North. Ever since the day boarding scheme introduced in Jammu in 2007, SAI conducts trials to pick up promising cagers for specialized coaching through experienced coaches and also helped trainees financially. "During their stay in the day-boarding, each boy is given a complete sports kit worth Rs 6,000 besides a monthly scholarship of Rs 600. As also, SAI bears actual sports competition expenses for those events held outside the state," disclosed SAI basketball coach, Aman Sharma in an interaction with SAN. Moreover, these boys are also insured for Rs one lakh against any injury during play. "With the introduction of SAI day-boarding scheme in Jammu, standard of the game has improved a lot. Our boys were runners-up in the All India Inter-SAI Hostels Championship. In addition, over 35 boys have already represented the state in the nationals in various age categories," informed Sharma. It was due to specialized coaching in the day-boarding scheme that performance of the J&K teams improved in the nationals and inter-university competitions in the last five years. The Selected List: Inderjeet Singh, Gurvinder Singh, Shubam Bhardwaj, Rohan Kumar, Raza Ali, Ramandeep Singh, Shafqat Mir, Abhinandan Singh, Kunal Sharma, Sanatjot Gupta, Zahid Choudhary, Harsimran Singh.
