Early Times Report
Jammu, June 21: About thousands of hectares of jungle area in Nagrota, upper reaches of Billawar and Udhampur belts have got severely affected due to wild fire that caused a loss of forest wealth worth crores.
Erupted on Wednesday, the raging fires that burned through forest belts including the areas in between upper reaches of Bajalta, Athem also the forests touching adjoining Udhampur district and Billawar belt of Kathua district had left many kilometres of land smoldering in ruin. No report of any loss to human lives came in till the filing of this report, sources in Forest and Wildlife department disclosed to Early Times that "the larger mammals would have survived after shifting their shelter to the adjoining forest areas but young birds, snakes and insects - as well as the vegetation itself - were destroyed."
While all repeated attempts to contact, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Jammu, Khawaja Qumar-ud-Din, for comment proved futile, according to eyewitnesses, none of officials from Forest Department visited the affected area in the entire day.
"During day time, sky was filled with dense clouds of acrid smoke and fire was not visible but soon after the Sun set, it was quite visible," said Karnail Singh, a villager. When Early Times team visited the hilly terrain of Kandi belt of Nagrota, 20 kms from here on late Wednesday evening, the wild fire was moving like a big snake in between the hills. People from adjoining villages were watching the scene as mute spectators.
It is pertinent to mention here that in the past few years, Forest fires in the state have already gutted precious forest wealth worth crores as the efforts made by the state government and Forest department in its control proved in-sufficient considering the tough geographical condition of the state.
