Scorching heat, frequent power cuts making life miserable for Jammuites | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 22: As the temperature hovers above 45 °C in Jammuites are not only facing harshness of heat wave that gripped north India but the ongoing problems have further compounded due to unscheduled long power cuts. With the scorching heat at his peak the people even living in metered areas in the city are experiencing power cuts ranging from eight to 10 hours and cursing PDD department which has failed to provide regular power to the people. The nonstop and power cuts in mid-nights have hit the normal life in the region and disrupted residents, as there is no predictable pattern to these power cuts, residents feel such outages will have an adverse impact on expensive electronic equipment like air-conditioners, televisions, refrigerators and stabilizers. Apart from the long scheduled and unscheduled power cuts, repeated spells of outages, lasting a few minutes, are also causing problems. Pertinently, the heat waves in Jammu have been rising consistently with mercury jumped upto 45 degree Celsius, on June 21 which is 2 notches above the recorded temperature of the previous year. The unscheduled power cuts coupled with frequent tripping of transmission lines amid soaring mercury have compounded the misery of the people, who are up in arms against the Omar government for its "discriminatory" attitude towards the region. It is pertinent to mention here that the power development department has shown no sign as par as the respite from unscheduled power cuts is concerned, as the Executive Engineer PDD Gurbachan Singh has said that the J&K is not operating in system isolation of the northern grid, Because it is interconnected hence any problem in the northern grid like low Voltage/ Frequency directly affects the power supply in the state. Regarding relentless unscheduled power cuts in the city he said that to avoid the consequences of low frequency these cuts are being resorted as the intended of Northern Regional Load Dispatch Center (NRLDC) for load shading. There have been regular shutdowns in the last months notifying the repairing practice either at the 132 KV or at the 33 Kv stations, despite these reparings residents have to face long power cuts and night outages, "to avoid any major breakdown in the stretched areas we in order to keep check on the lines have to come with such shutdowns as if we avoid these repairing a minor fault could cause an inflaming damage" he added. |
