Pre-1952 position to Musharraf's formula to sovereignty | Congress Mum, BJP Indifferent | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 22: Before June 10, 2012, the Kashmir-based communal organization National Conference (NC) used to demand greater autonomy or pre-1953 position. Notwithstanding the fact that Sheikh Abdullah had said good bye to autonomy in 1975 to fulfill his insatiable lust for power and pelf. Notwithstanding the fact that he and his son Farooq Abdullah very cheerfully allowed New Delhi to extend 18 more central laws to the state after 1975. Notwithstanding the fact that the Abdullahs consistently flirted with the same Congress leadership which had on occasions more than one shown them their rightful place. It was the Congress which got Sheikh Abdullah dismissed and arrested in 1953. It was the Congress which withdrew support to Sheikh Abdullah in 1977. It was the Congress which dismissed Farooq Abdullah's government in 1984. The Congress used very strong language both against Sheikh Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah. In fact, the Congress dismissed Sheikh Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah as threat to national security. But such was the nature of their lust for power and pelf that they took U-turn after U-turn to fulfill that lust. As said, the NC insisted on autonomy in its own way till June 10. Things suddenly changed on June 11, when NC MP from Anantnag Mehboob Beg expressed himself in favour of the former Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf's four point Kashmir solution, saying it was a commendable solution. He said the Musharraf's formula could be used as a launching pad. In other words, he made common cause with the APHC-G and the People's Democratic Party (PDP), which have on several occasions commended the Musharraf's formula: Shared sovereignty, soft borders, demilitarization and joint mechanism. The PDP has of late started saying that the solution has to be within the framework of Indian Constitution and that it would work for bringing Jammu and Kashmir and New Delhi closer than ever before. That the Abdullahs have not dissociated themselves till date from what Beg said while commending the Musharraf's divisive, communal and break-India formula is a proof that they share his view. Beg had undoubtedly cross the Lakshman Rekha by suggesting that the Musharraf's formula be used as a launching pad. However, it was the ailing permanent general secretary of NC Sheikh Nazir who crossed all the lines on June 21, when he demanded sovereign status not only for Kashmir, but for the entire State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh conveniently overlooking the fact that while the battle-cry of an overwhelming majority of people in Jammu Pradesh and Ladakh is complete integration in the Indian Union, there are many sections of society in Kashmir which hate the idea of Kashmir becoming autonomous or independent or becoming part of Pakistan. The New Delhi-appointed interlocutors have appreciated this reality in their report on Jammu and Kashmir. What Nazir said yesterday could be construed as an open revolt against India. In other words, it can be construed as the NC's revolt against India. But what he said should not surprise anybody. For, the NC is the other name of the Muslim League which fought for and got Muslim Pakistan. However, what is surprising and disturbing is the fact that while the Congress, which has been sharing power with the NC, has not uttered a word against NC, the BJP, which terms itself as an ultra nationalist party, too, has not been reacting. Both these so-called national formations are watching the NC's onslaught on the Indian state as mute spectators. It hardly matter. 2012 is not 1947. 2012 is 2012 and the Indian nation is very much there to inflict a comprehensive defeat on those demanding sovereign status for Jammu and Kashmir.
