Reformed Mukhtar returns home with high hopes
`My family is my top priority'

Poonch & Jammu, June 24: He took a risk ten years ago to become a militant. He crossed the LoC and stayed in Pakistan for ten years. Recently he has taken a much bigger risk-this time to lead a normal life in his home town Mendhar. Once again he crossed to this side of the state `illegally'. He had to dodge the Pakistani army and border surveillance mechanisms of India and Pakistan.
Mukhtar Ahmed is back home. His Pakistani wife and three kids are his primary concern. After dodging the Pakistani army, Mukhtar could not escape the surveillance of the Indian army. He was caught along with his family. However, after brief questioning was handed over to the Jammu Kashmir police. He was soon let off to meet his family.
Mukhtar showed first signs of change after his marriage, claims his wife. "After marriage, my father counseled him against being a militant", she said.
Mukhtar's sudden arrival inm his native village evoked massive attention. Highly emotiuonal scenes were witnessed when he met his family, friends and neighbours.
Mukhtar was fascinated by the idea of an Independent Jammu Kashmir when he was only 15. One day he sneaked into Pakistan Occupaied Kashmir and got arms training. However, he was soon disillusioned and decided to give up violence.
According to Mukhtar, specially trained militants are waiting to sneak into this part of the state. He informed the police about a refresher course undertaken by 50 militants in a camp.
In a similar development, a youth from Rajouri came back after giving up militancy.
Pertinent to mention, the government has a policy for return and rehabilitation of militants from Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. However, according to the police, the policy has not taken off properly owing to lcak of cooperation from the Pakistani authorities. As a result, not more than 100 militants have returned to their homes via Nepal in the past two years.
