'Social awakening key to combating drug menace'

Jammu , June 25: On the eve of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a one day brain storming session on the drug abuse and its prevention was organized at Amar Singh Club here to draw a strategy for combating the dreaded social malady.
The event is being conducted by Gunjan organization for community development under the aegis of Regional Resource Training Center (RRTC), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in conjunction with J&K Confederation of Voluntary Social and Charitable Organizations like Destitute And Handicapped Welfare Association (DAHWA), Social Reform Charitable Organisation, Attitude Change International Organisation, Regional Education Society, Supertax Organisation.
Over 190 million people are affected one or the other drug, most of them productive youth and the menace is spreading like wild fire. India is wedged between the world's two largest areas of illicit opium production, the Golden Crescent and the Golden Triangle which has traditionally been viewed as source of vulnerability, since it has made India both a destination and a transit route for opiates produced in these regions.
President, DAHWA, S S Sumbria presented vote of thanks. The workshop was attended by variety of stakeholders including Dy Controller, Drug and Food Control, Superintendent Narcotic Control Bureau, Police, Education, Health, Social Welfare, Information Deptt, Print & electronic media, JK State AIDS Control Society, Journalists, Advocates, Social Activist Civil Society Youth, parents and Panchayati Raj representatives. As the role of media is crucial in tackling drug abuse and illicit trafficking, an appeal was made to print and electronic media to join this campaign. All pledged to weed out this menace and make all efforts to generate awareness among the masses about drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
Later, a skit on Drug Abuse was presented at railway station Jammu.
