Early Times Report

Jammu , June 25: Medanta Urology and Kidney Institute in Association with Department of Gynaecology & Obstetrician, Government Medical College and SMGS Hospital Jammu organised a workshop on Continence.
By commemorating month of June as 'World Continence Month' and June 18 to 25, as 'World Continence Week', it was intended to draw attention and increase public awareness about incontinence and give patients of the disease confidence to seek consultation from the experts.
The workshop focussed on the theme "We're Asking, We're Helping" thus enabling and empowering a staggering number of incontinent women who suffer silently, unaware of the treatment options available for them today.
Dr Amita Jain (Sr. Consultant UroGynaecologist from Medanta operated two cases belonging to Economically Weaker Sections of the society. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Amita Jain said that Urinary incontinence is loss of bladder control. Symptoms can range from mild leaking to uncontrollable wetting. It is a common condition that can happen to anyone. This disease is more common than Chronic Sinusitis and heart disease. Though a sensitive condition, it affects an estimated 200 million people across the world. In the Western, they have specialized clinics to treat them. In India we do not have adequate data regarding this ailment. Dr Amita Jain told that more than half of adults will experience incontinence at some point in their lifetime, sometimes as an effect of medications or a urinary tract infection, and sometimes because of weakened pelvic floor muscles. Urinary incontinence is the second leading cause of institutionalizing elderly people, but "it's a big myth" that urinary incontinence goes hand-in-hand with aging.
Dr Shashi Gupta, Head Deptt of Gynaecology and Obst appreciated the role of Medanta by organising such activities with latest techniques and sharing knowledge with the upcoming students and doctors.
