early times report
Srinagar, June 25: The tragic fire at the Shrine of Pir Dastgir in Srinagar has shocked everybody cutting across religious barriers. The saint is being held in equal reverence both by the Muslims and the Hindus in the Valley. The fire that destroyed the old wooden structure of the shrine has, therefore, actually burnt in the hearts and minds of millions of those who hold the saint in high esteem.
While it is absolutely essential to find out the cause that resulted in the destruction of this 11th century shrine whose architecture was unique and even the building as such formed a proud part of our heritage, nobody should be allowed to play politics on this highly sensitive issue that concerns the faith of millions.
Armed guards were posted at the shrine for the protection of the holy relic inside the shrine and it was also the duty of those guards to ensure that no harm came to the shrine building. The dereliction of duty if any on the part of the posted armed guards needs to be found out. Unless the actual reason that led to the devastating fire is found out and placed in public domain, rumours, emotions and misgivings are likely to continue. The state government has decided to have the conflagration probed by Kashmir Divisional Commissioner, Asgar Hassan Samoon who must lose no time in establishing what led to the tragic fire incident.
Already protesting youths have been engaging themselves in stone pelting incidents with the police in Downtown of Srinagar city. Clashes and mob violence always inherit the danger of an unfortunate incident snowballing into a series of unfortunate incidents over which neither the security forces nor the protesting mobs would have any control.
All his life Pir Dastgir whose original name was Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani taught spiritual purity, peace and patience. It would do no respect to the personage of the great saint to indulge in violence or mob frenzy. Anti-national elements are always on the look out for occasions like this through exploitations of which they can destroy the calm and peace of the Valley.
The State government must ensure that the religious sentiments of millions of Muslims and Non-Muslims connected with the sanctity of the shrine are respected. If there has been a mishap that caused such a huge tragedy then those responsible for it must be given the most stringent punishment. If the fire occurred accidentally then this needs to be verified and brought to the knowledge of those who have been mourning the destruction of the shrine.
Maintaining law and order is the primary responsibility of the state government that must act quickly to ensure that the situation does not slip out of control. At the same time the Holy Relic that is safe and has been retrieved from the shrine must be displayed to the devotees immediately to ensure them that the symbol of their faith is safe and unharmed.
