Sham for coordinated efforts to combat Drug Abuse

JAMMU, June 26 : The Drugs and Food Control Organization, Jammu observed "International Day against Drug Abuse and illicit drug trafficking. The theme for the day was "Think Health….. Not Drugs".Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma was the chief guest on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister highlighted the need of creating mass awareness about the harmful effects of Drug Abuse. He said that this dreaded menace is spreading like wild fire and the government, NGOs and the people have to play an essential role to weed out this evil from the society. He said that the drug abuse has also contributed in raising crime rate which needs to be checked. The Minister emphasized the need of coordinated efforts among different agencies like Police, Excise, Revenue and Narcotics Control Bureau to bring down the scale of drug abuse. He also stressed on the need of opening detoxification centres for rehabilitation of drug abuse victims. Satish Gupta, Controller Drugs and Food Control Organisation, J&K gave details of the activities being carried out by the department and appealed all the stake holders for joining hands to eradicate this social evil from the society. The NGOs present on the occasion, lamented the need for parents to keep close vigil over their wards and notice any behavioural changes in their attitude with seriousness.
Others present on the occasion were Director Horticulture, J. N. Sharma, SSP Jammu, Parbhat Singh, Director Floriculture, K. K. Sharma, Zonal Superintendent Narcotics Control Bureau, R. C. Bodh, Principal, Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu officers of the department, Psychiatrist, Dr. Manu Arora, Resident Director Emcure, Satish Koul, NGOs, Members of Chemist Associations etc.
Sham Lal also inaugurated a painting exhibition of Suresh Sharma on the occasion by unveiling his one of the paintings. Later, the Minister presented mementoes to the dignitaries and participants.
