PDP condemns attack on Shabir Shah, Naeem Khan | "Hasty cleaning during night at gutted shrine an attempt to destroy evidence" | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 26: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the hooliganism indulged in by some elements at Khanyar yesterday in which senior political leaders Shabir Ahmed Shah and Nayeem Ahmed Khan were maltreated. The two leaders had gone to visit the area in the aftermath of a mysterious fire incident that consumed the shrine of Hazrat Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jeelani RA on Monday. A spokesman of the party said in a statement that there was no occasion to show such disrespect to the senior leaders or display hooliganism on a sombre occasion like this. He said the anguish and pain caused by the destruction of an iconic spiritual centre is nobody's monopoly and all Kashmiris particularly the followers of Hazrat Dastgeer Sahib all over the world share this pain. He said it seems some political elements who have historically used muscle power and browbeating as their preferred political tool are trying to fish in troubled waters. He said it is easy to identify such elements and by now the government should have proceeded against them. But, it is unlikely to happen as they have been indulging in such acts as a part of their political tactics and are enjoying political patronage and protection from the NC leadership. The spokesman also expressed concern at the hasty cleaning operations at the gutted shrine during the night. He wondered whether this was opportune to remove all evidence even before the government had ordered an enquiry into the cause of this unfortunate incident. The spokesman expressed serious concern at the government's inability to safeguard the shrines, dotting various places of the valley which have a tremendous religious significance and heritage value. He said the press reports that a highly respected organization like the INTACH had repeatedly warned the government about serious threat to these wooden assets of great architectural value had been ignored by the government and the Wakf Board amounts to criminal negligence. The spokesman said it is a matter of grave concern that some ruling party politicians who also are part of the Wakf Board have been interfering in the matters of prominent shrines as if they are their personal property. |
