Situation in valley keeping security grid on tenterhooks | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 26: Close on the heels of start of annual Amarnath pilgrimage this year the law and order situation in Kashmir valley is keeping the entire security grid on tenterhooks.Gutting over of 200 year old Dastageer sahib shrine in Khanyar area of Srinagar early Monday morning has already raised passions leading to sporadic incidents of stone pelting followed by call for bandh on Tuesday. Large number of tourists/pilgrims headed towards Srinagar and tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam are bound to face hardships in view of the tense situation in Srinagar. Anticipating angry backlash the state government took timely measures by restricting movement of local residents in downtown areas and sensitive localities in old city area to prevent large assembly of trouble makers. The restrictions would continue in the walled city area on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the normal life was hit hard on account of strike call on Tuesday. At the same time the political leadership of the state handled the crisis situation tactfully and prevented any major flare even though the anger was brewing under the surface. Chief Minister Omar Abdullh returned home midway through his UK visit and visited the shrine to took stock of the situation. He also assured speedy reconstruction of the shrine to its pristine glory and hoped that people in Kashmir would maintain peace and exercise restraint.The high level inquiry ordered by the state government would surely go in to the details and carry out indepth analysis before piecing together the sequence leading to mysterious fire. |
