Undeterred by snowfall, pilgrims move towards Amarnath shrine | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jun 26: Despite fresh snowfall at several places on traditional Pahalgam yatra track, pilgrims, including women and children, are moving ahead towards the Holy Cave Shrine of Amarnath, situated at 13,500 feet in south Kashmir Himalayas. More than 10,000 pilgrims had darshan of the self made Ice- Shivlingam in the shrine on the first day of the annual pilgrimage yesterday, when Governor N N Vohra, who is also chairman of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, also paid obeisance and prayed for peace and harmony in the state. Official sources said here today that pilgrimage on traditional Pahalgam track was suspended for some time following fresh snowfall at Sheshnag and Pisso top, resulting in severe cold. However, as the day progressed and weather improved, pilgrims at different halting stations were allowed to proceed towards the cave shrine. But, they said, the pilgrims were urged to take extra precautions to avoid any accident during the tracking in the higher reaches which are still under snow. However, pilgrims said this year due to rains the track has become slippery. The authorities had made all arrangements for the pilgrims at different halting stations on the traditional track. Reports said thousands of pilgrims today left Baltal base camp for the holy cave shrine despite rains in the morning. The pilgrimage was going on smoothly, the report added |
