Secessionists Ruling The Roost | Believe it or not, but ironically it is fact | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 26: An interaction with many during the last three days in Jammu indicates that most of them had been bemoaning since long the "exceptionally positive attitude" of the custodians of Indian State towards those who had "preached secession from the political and constitutional organization of India". This scribe met people to ascertain their views on the interlocutors' recommendations. Believe it or not, but ironically it is a fact that most of them not only abused and ridiculed the interlocutors, but also questioned the very credentials of the custodians of the Indian State or those who are holding constitutional positions. In fact, they accused the custodians of the Indian State of "promoting those who have been indulging in soft-secessionism and those demanding independence from India". To make their point they referred to the appointment of "Hasib Drabu" as chairman of Jammu & Kashmir Bank Ltd as well as Economic Advisor to the Jammu & Kashmir Government, appointment of "Amitabh Mattoo" as Vice-Chancellor of University of Jammu, appointment of "Riaz Punjabi" as Vice-Chancellor of Kashmir University and appointment of "Sidiq Wahid" as Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University of Science and Technology, Kashmir. They said that while "Drabu openly demanded independence from India just a couple of days before his appointment as chairman of Jammu & Kashmir Bank Ltd", "Mattoo and Punjabi had written and spoken extensively against New Delhi and in favour of Kashmir's autonomy before they were appointed as Vice-Chancellors". "Punjabi had even recommended division of Jammu province on communal lines," they said. As for Wahid, they said that "he did not write a single word during all those eight months when he held the prestigious position of Maharaja Gulab Singh Chair Professor in the University of Jammu", that "he flouted the leave rules to take part in the anti-India seminars on Kashmir in foreign countries, including Pakistan"; that "he could not draw his salary for months together because he had flouted the leave rules and left the station a number of times without seeking prior permission or without informing the concerned head of department" and that "the authorities, instead of taking action against him, appointed him as Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University". They said many other things about Wahid, Mattoo and Punjabi and expressed grave concern not only over their elevation to the position of Vice-Chancellor, but also over the fact that "Union President, at the behest of the authorities in Jammu & Kashmir and New Delhi, conferred upon two of them the Padma Shree Award". Their refrain was that "the custodians of the Indian State, instead of booking them and bringing them to justice, had given legitimacy to the politics of freedom and autonomy by giving them status". "This is the way the word end, not with bang but with a whimper," they said and what they said is self-explanatory. It is difficult to disagree with them when they asserted that "secessionists are ruling the roost".
