Army, influx of tourists & holy Amarnath Yatra | CM's Negative Attitude | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 26: Yes, the entire Kashmir Valley has been witnessing perfect peace, particularly since 2011. Leave aside a few violent incidents, including attacks on the CRPF camps, and today's shutdown in the Kashmir Valley. Kashmiri separatists called for a general strike in the aftermath of burning of the 200-year-old shrine of Peer Dastgeer Sahib Shrine in the Khanyar area of Srinagar city. That peace has been prevailing in Kashmir could be seen from the fact that lakhs and lakhs of tourists from across the country, and even outside, have been thronging the Valley since 2011, thus enriching Kashmir's economy and improving the financial condition of those engaged in the highly profitable tourism industry. There is hardly any hotel in Kashmir Valley which is not full of tourists. The houseboats are also full of tourists. The Shikrawallas are over busy. Almost all the restaurants and dhabas are finding it difficult to handle the situation arising out of this tourists' influx. In fact, all in Kashmir, including the auto and taxi owners and poniwallas, are busy in minting money. Besides these tourists, the number of pilgrims visiting the Holy Cave Shrine of Lord Shiva at Amarnath has also multiplied. The number is increasing by the year. The number of pilgrims visiting the Holy Cave Shrine this year would be more than four lakh despite the fact that the Shrine Board has reduced the period of pilgrimage from two months to less than 40 days much to the chagrin of the devotees of Lord Shiva. The fundamental reason behind this huge rush to Kashmir Valley as well as the enthusiasm among those desirous of visiting the Holy Cave Shrine of Lord Shiva is peace. Who has reined in the subversives and trouble-makers in Kashmir? It is the Army and the paramilitary forces. It is the Army which looks after and controls the annual Amarnath yatra; it is the Army which is keeping a close watch on persons with dubious credentials and ensuring that tourists who come to Kashmir enjoy to the hilt in a peaceful environment. Remove the Army and paramilitary forces from Kashmir and you will find the Pakistan-backed extremists of all hues regrouping themselves and creating disturbances across the Valley. The credit for the prevailing peace in Kashmir undoubtedly goes to the Army and paramilitary forces, and not the so-called political establishment in the state. The political establishment is not just incompetent to ensure peace in the Valley. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah knows it fully well and yet he from time to time speaks against the Army and paramilitary forces and even demands their withdrawal from Kashmir. It is ironical that those who have been making supreme sacrifices to maintain peace in the Valley are being targeted by those who have miserably failed to discharge their obligations towards the state and its people. It would be a crime against man and God if the Army and paramilitary forces in the state are offered brickbats, instead of bouquets. |
