Azad magic fails to pull crowd | Kishtwar rally cancelled | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Kishtwar, June 26:- Amid shock and disbelief, the Congress men heard the news of cancellation of Ghulam Nabi Azad's rally at Chowghan grounds. Azad, it is believed, cancelled the rally following reports that the people had not turned up at the venue to hear him. This was Azad's first public rally at Kishtwar in over 4 years. Though leaders from Soz group were seen roaming around, they did not offer any help. Interestingly the two factions of the Congress gave two different reasons for the cancellation. Soz loyalists said the rally was cancelled as Sonia Gandhi had directed Azad to rush to the National Capital. Azad supporters said Sonia had advised Azad to report at Srinagar to keep an eye on the situation arising in wake of fire incident at Dastgeer Sahib Srinagar. The cancelation of rally evoked discussions in the town. Some quarters blame the recent debacle of Youth Congress election as the reason behind the failure of Azad rally in which less than 500 people turned up. It was blamed that the youth activist pulls up the party leaders over their failure to address their problem. The Youth activists, who are annoyed over the party decision, did not turn up for today's public rally as their names did not feature in party list. The youth who are considered as backbone of the party even approached the union Health Minister to look into the bungling in voter lists of Youth congress for Kishtwar district and after getting dejected, they decided to teach the senior party leader a lesson. The Congress party that once managed to get over 14000 votes in Kishtwar constituency in 2002 Assembly election, has suffered a lot. According to insiders Azad prefers a week Congress in Kishtwar because of his family relationship with National conference MLA Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo. In order to keep the morale of its party activists, the senior leaders down and outplayed Congress in Kishtwar are seen appeasing the party workers. They are being informed that Azad would visit the town next week. Only time will tell whether Azad's whirlwind tour of Chenab region helps the Congress party to regain its image which is at decline since Congress party fails to accommodate any of its party MLA from Chenab region in council of ministers after G M Saroori was expelled two years ago.
