Rumour mongers perfecting their art in aftermath of Dastgeer Sahib shrine fire

Early Times Report

Srinagar, June 26: As people in the valley- cutting across faiths and religions-were mourning the loss of the revered Dastegeer Sahib Shrine and some even were mourning the numbness of the government machinery for it would have saved the shrine from devastating fire had it have had responded to the fire warnings, rumour mills were churning out weird stories throughout the day Tuesday.
Amid shutdown and complete strike that was observed to mourn the loss of Peer Dastegerr Sahib Shrine in devastating fire, rumours about stone pelting in remote areas were doing rounds all the day.
This correspondent in a bid to reach Dastegeer Sahib Shrine was stopped by police near Khayam Chowk. Then I took another route via Sothu Barbarshah, however, police has laid a naka in that chowk too and I was told to return as nobody was allowed to move beyond that point.
In the meantime, a motorcyclist came from the opposite direction, I asked him to stop to apprise be about the happenings.
"yaar, zabardast jung chal raha hai, golyaan chal rahi hain, mere khayal mein abtak do teen lashen giri hoongi" When I was about to take a turn, I saw a motorcyclist coming from the opposite direction (war is going on between stone pelters and CRPF, bullets were raining, I think two to three people might have been killed so for).
I got disturbed and angry too, I rang a senior police official and enquired from him about the happenings. "Situation though tense but under control, restrictions have been put in place in and around Dastegeer Sahib Shrine,
however, no untoward incident has been reported as yet" the police official said. I took a long breath and in a relaxed mood left for the civil secretariat to see how babus were doing on a strike day.
As I entered the office chamber of a senior minister, I saw a rumour monger who has perfected rumour mongering to an art form, discussing the situation with the minister.
"Dooru Shahabad in Anantnag is very tense, hundreds of youth took to the streets and pelted stones on police and CRPF people, as the situation refused to die down, police opened fire on the mob, six people received bullet injuris, two are stated to be very critical" monger was narrating to the minister as if he was himself witness to the incident.
This correspondent immediately rang a senior police official in the district who laughed at me very loudly, "yaar aisa kuch nahin hai, nodoubt there is complete strike but no such incident was reported from anywhere in the district" he said.
Actually rumour mongers don't care about the repercussions, they want to be famous.
