Shrine torching to destabilise peace & Govt. | | | Khoon ka Badla June mein laylengay."This used to be the cry during any event that shook Jammu and Kashmir from time to time during the last two years. The Government and the people in the state had taken this cry lightly because of the two peaceful summers. People and the Government had reasons to feel happy because of the bumper tourist traffic to the Kashmir valley and on account of heavy registration of pilgrims for the annual Amarnath yatra. While it took the Government and the peace loving people in the state over a year to build the structure on which peace rested it took the anti-India elements less than a week for destabilising peace in Kashmir. A disturbed Kashmir casts its shadow on the Jammu region. If one takes into account three to four incidents into account one would have no hesitation in saying that elements have become active again for destabilising peace. The first sign of such a programme has been witnessed in the shape of intermittent violation of ceasefire on the LOC and on the International Border. These violations, reports reveal, have been part of the progr amme of assisting groups of militants in sneaking into Jammu and Kashmir for escalating the level of violence. One report says that between April and the third week of June more than 100 militants have crossed into Jammu and Kashmir. This is one of the reasons for rise in the incidents of violence. One had seen more than half a dozen grenade and gun attacks on the security pickets and convoys in which more than five securitymen were injured. One had realised the significance of a nexus between militans and a small group of policemen. Thank God the police authorities have unearthed this nexus and more than three policemen have been arrested and one expects more policemen to be detained for questioning in order to unravel deeper details about the nexus. Far in Handwara a holy scripture was desecrated for laying seeds for bigger acts of subversion, sabotage and violence. The passions over the desecration had not died when the burning of the historic shrine of Dastgeer Sahib in Srinagar added new dimensions to the fluid security situation. No doubt the valley did not witness violence, tension and clashes of the pattern one had witnessed when the holy shrine at Chrar-i-Sharif was set on fire in 1995. Well the basic idea behind these acts of desecraton of holy books, damaging or torching of shrines and other places of worship has been to destabilise peace in the state and dislodge the Government. Even before the rise of Pakistan sponsored militancy groups of mischief mongers had vandalised and damaged about a dozen temples and shrines in south Kashmir in 1986. The purpose was not only to destabilise peace but to dislodge the Government headed by G.M. Shah. Well peace was slightly destabilised but the incidents hastened the end of the Shah led Government. Since majority of people in Kashmir are shrine believers their passions and emotions get rocked and rattled whenever shrines are damaged. This was the case during the siege of the Hazratbal shrine by militants in 1993 and the torching of the Chrar-i-Sharif shrine in 1995. These t wo incidents destabilised peace in the state and delayed restoration of democracy to Jammu and Kashmir. And those who have been responsible for torching the Shrine of Dastgeer Sahib had in their mind the idea of destabilising peace and the Government headed by Omar Abdullah. Whether the Government gets dislodged onot is not as important as the adverse impact the torching of the shrine had on the flow of tourist traffic to Kashmir. It is unfortunate because several thousand families, connected with tourism, had suffered a lot when tourist season to Kashmir had been wrecked by militancy related violence during the last 19 years. One does expect subversives and separatists to allow people in Jammu an Kashmir to taste the fruits of peace and progress. This is possible if they stop indulging in activities deterimental to peace and communal harmony. |
