"We will cover these villages by supplying potable water within next two years", said Chief Engineer Public Health Engineering department Gulam Rasool Zargar. "We intend to register all illegal connections in the coming months", the Chief Engineer toldKNS. "All illegal encroachments on valley's water resources will be removed as all of them are a state property", he added.
Zargar also informed KNS the department is bound by 2038 vision document, under which the department will be able to cater to a projected population of 38 lakh souls in the Srinagar city by year 2038. The Chief Engineer claimed the government has surplus water for supplying to consumers across the valley. "Our present daily storage and supply capacity is 7 crore gallons while our consumption is 6.2 crore", Zargar told KNS. He also said the present infrastructure in the valley will easily cater to whole of the population till 2013. Giving details, the chief Engineer said three reservoirs located at Rangil, Nishat and Alsteng are presently supplying water to whole of the city. "In order to meet any unseen eventuality, we are constructing a raw reservoir at a cost of 5 crore rupees at Alsteng", Zargar said. "This is also a part of the disaster preparedness plan of the department", he added. He also said work on two colossal water supply projects is also under way. "We have got two projects in hand. One project at Sukhnag has a capacity of 1 crore gallons and will be completed at a cost of rupees 121 crore ", he said. "Another project at Tangnar will be completed at a cost of 148 crore rupees having a capacity of 1 crore gallons", he added. The projects are scheduled to be completed by 2014, he added. "1 crore gallon suffices for a population of 3 lakh people", said the engineer.
