Govt in no mood to enhance retirement age | Omar-Employees row | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 27: Fearing backlash from more than 6 lakh unemployed youth in Jammu and Kashmir, government is in no hurry to take final decision on the demand of enhancement of retirement age of employees from 58 years to 60 years. A senior officer from GAD said the Cabinet Sub Committee may discuss the issue in next two weeks, but it is not going to take any decision, as coalition government fears it could meet with opposition from youth in all the three regions of state at a time when number of unemployed youth have crossed 6 lakh mark. Sources said that though the employees went on two day pen down strike on May 8-9 and a high level committee headed by Chief Secretary Madhav Lal has also submitted its report to Cabinet Sub-Committee headed by Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather, but government has decided to adopt wait and watch policy for the time being. Further the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), could also get a handy issue, which has been accusing the government of ignoring the youth of state and creating employment opportunities. "There are so many issues involved and could have adverse repercussion in future for National Conference and Congress. Government has so far accepted most of the demands of the employees, but on this issue, they are slow to react", said a senior bureaucrat. Enhancement in the retirement age is one of the key demands of Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) an amalgam of nearly 50 unions of the government employees, which had negotiated with the Sub-Committee on number of issues, including release of arrears on account of implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission report, removal of pay anomalies, conversion of the cost of living allowance (COLA) into dearness allowance (DA) and regularization of daily wagers. |
