How Popular Are Pakistani Agents In Valley?
Fed up with trouble-makers, Kashmiris blackened Shabir's face

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 27: How popular are the Pakistani agents in Kashmir? Do the people of Kashmir trust and respect them and obey their diktat? Do the Kashmir-based Pakistan agents represent the will and aspirations of the Valley Muslims? The Kashmir-based Pakistani agents are not just unpopular but they are also being looked down upon by the people whom they exploited for years, minted easy money, became multi-millionaire and disturbed peace in the Valley. They do not represent the will and aspirations of Kashmiri Muslims. They only represent themselves and a few other vested interests. The fact of the matter is that no Kashmiri separatist was ever popular in the Valley. They could make their presence felt only through the use of force or by administering threats. They had been urging the people of Kashmir to boycott elections but with no result. The people of Kashmir expressed their no confidence last time in separatists and extremists in 2010 when over 80 per cent of the electorate exercised its franchise to elect panchayats and panches and sarpanches. This large-scale enthusiastic participation of the people in democratic process was appreciated worldwide.
It would be no exaggeration to say that it is the authorities in New Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir, besides the so-called Delhi-based think-tanks and ill-motivated and opportunist social scientists, who have been giving legitimacy to the otherwise unpopular, unscrupulous, greedy, self-centered and self-styled freedom fighters like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Abdul Gani Bhat, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Yasin Malik, Nayeem Khan, Azam Inqilabi, Bilal Lone, Sajad Lone, Ayesha Andrabi, to mention only a few.
That these self-styled freedom fighters are looked down upon in Kashmir could be seen from what happened in Kashmir yesterday, when the Muslims across the Valley disrupted life to register their protest against gutting of the over 200-year-old Dastgeer Sahib Shrine in Khanyar area of Srinagar. Separatists like Shabir Ahmad Shah and Nayeem Khan wanted to exploit the situation in order to provoke the people to demand independence from India or raise anti-India slogans, but with no result.
On the contrary, many young Kashmiri Muslims pounced upon them and blackened the face of Shabir Shah in presence of hundreds of people in the Khanyar area. According to Times Now, about a dozen young Kashmiris, who were armed with iron rods, bamboo sticks and stones, attacked the separatists and blackened their faces - a fact corroborated by many in Srinagar. In fact, Shah and Khan themselves reacted yesterday to what was done to them by the people. They, inter-alia, said: "It was a pre-planned attack. We know them. We have identified them. They are wearing the robes of Azadi but are involved in anti-movement activities. When we reached there, people raised pro-freedom slogans and were accompanying us to the shrine. Suddenly 10 to 12 boys armed with stones, bamboo sticks and iron rods appeared there and attacked us…They wanted to frighten us but let me (Shah) remind them we have full faith in Allah. Threats and assaults cannot keep us at bay…It is a black day for us but people tried to hijack the situation and settle their scores. We want to express solidarity with the people but some miscreants tried to launch a murderous attack on us…It is for the first time that a person (read Shah) who has spent more than 20 years in jail was assaulted".
Both Shah and Khan did try their best to deflect the people's attention from the real issue by indirectly pointing fingers at their opponents, including Mirwaiz and Abdul Gani Bhat. They are unhappy with Mirwaiz and Bhat. They are unhappy with Mirwaiz because he has not expelled Bhat from the amalgam despite their repeated requests. They are unhappy with Bhat because the latter has dismissed UN resolutions on Jammu & Kashmir as irrelevant. They may say anything but the fact remains that they are no longer held in esteem by the Kashmiri Muslims, who have seen through their sinister game-plan and want to lead a dignified and peaceful life. They have come to realize, and rightly, that Pakistan and its agents in Kashmir have only added to their woes and that India is a better place to live in and prosper.
What was done to Shabir Shah and other separatists in Kashmir by the local people, especially young Muslims, would be remembered in the Valley for years to come. It would be better of the likes of Shabir Shah to learn lesson from the yesterday's development of great import and reform themselves. They must say goodbye to the politics of opportunism and emotional blackmail and abandon the dangerous path which Islamabad has charted for them. The sooner they do so the better. Otherwise, the young Kashmiri Muslims will surely beat other self-styled freedom fighters and blacken their faces.
