HC seeks previous cases referred for remission | Murder Convict seeks remission of sentence | | Jammu, June 28 (JNF) : In a petition filed by Rattan Lal s/o Shanker Dass presently lodged in District Jail Jammu a murder convict who was convicted on July 18, 1995 to undergo imprisonment for life and a fine of Rs 50,000 seeking remission/commutation of his sentence, Justice JP Singh of J&K High Court Jammu Wing after hearing Adv Anil Sethi appearing for the petitioner issued notice to the Commissioner/Secretary Home Dept and DG Prisons for their response to the petition within four weeks. Court also issued notice to the Supt District Jail Jammu to disclose on affidavit the number of convicts, whose cases were referred to the state Govt for remission during the last five years. He shall also indicate on to whether or not the petitioner's case was recommended for remission of sentence, if not, the reasons therefore. In the petition the petitioner has submitted that he has already served 24 years of sentence till date and for no reasons his case has not been referred to the state Govt for remission of his sentence. In view of the larger public interest involved in the matter, Justice JP Singh issued various directions to the Superintendent District Jail to disclose on affidavit the number of convicts whose cases were referred to the state Govt for remission during the last five years. |
