| Need for upgrading fire fighting devices in shrines, hospitals | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 28: Following failure of the fire services agencies in dousing the flames that gutted the historic Dastgeer Sahib shrine, the state Government plans to upgrade the fire fighting mechanism in and around over 100 shrines in the Kashmir valley.
Official sources said that measures were to be taken in hand for modernizing fire fighting system in and around historic temples and shrines in Jammu region.
Informed sources besides the eyewitnesses said that had the fire fighting vehicles reached the Dastgeer Sahib shrine on time the damage to the shrine could have been minimized. They said when the first fire fighting vehicles reached the site of the incident its water tank went empty within 10 minutes.
It took, they added, between 30 and 60 minutes for the remaining fire fighting vehicles to reach the spot and by that time the entire structure had been gutted.
Official sources said that the Government would make available fire fighting kits to all major shrines, mosques and temples in the state.
In addition to this the Government plans to set up a committee of senior officers and experts for reviewing the entire fire fighting mechanism available in the state and recommend measures that could tone up the system required for meeting any eventuality. However, senior officials of the Directorate of Fire services said that fire fighting mechanism had never been a priority for the successive state Governments. They also said that annual allocations for upgrading the fire fighting system remained quite meagre.
Experts are of the opinion that besides upgrading the fire fighting mechanism in and around the shrines there was need for modernizing the system in and around all major hospitals besides private nursing homes. They said that senior officers from the Department of Health and Medical Education should visit all the private nursing homes and make it mandatory for each nursing home to set up modern fire fighting devices. |
